Six things to sort out before you leave

Entry rules change: always check the official Indonesian websites and your own foreign ministry’s travel advice.

Planning Bali in 6 steps

  1. Visa: the e-VoA

For French, Belgian and Swiss nationals: a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for 30 days. Applying online on the official immigration website saves queuing at the airport. Passport valid for at least 6 months. Add the tourist levy: both amounts are in the budget above.

  2. International permit and scooter

Riding a scooter requires an international driving permit with the motorcycle category, on top of your national license. Without it, police checks and, above all, travel insurance that often refuses to cover an accident. Helmet compulsory. Beginner: take a driver.

  3. Water and health

Tap water is not drinkable: refill dispensers in most accommodation. Mosquito repellent (dengue), especially in the rainy season. Do not touch monkeys or stray dogs (rabies). Review your vaccinations with a doctor before departure.

    Guide: Bali health and safety
  4. Money and ATMs

Use ATMs attached to a bank branch (BCA, Mandiri, BNI…), less exposed to fraud. For exchange, only licensed counters, and count your money again at the desk. Warungs and small shops take cash only.

    Guide: Bali travel budget
  5. e-SIM and network

A data e-SIM can be installed before departure; a local SIM (Telkomsel, XL, Indosat) is sold at the airport with your passport. Coverage weakens in the Munduk valleys, in the east of Nusa Penida and on some beaches.

  6. Waste and respect

A provincial regulation adopted in 2018, enforced since 2019, bans single-use plastic bags, straws and polystyrene boxes. Water bottle, cloth bag, and no litter left on the trails. Away from the beach, cover up: swimwear and bare chests are not worn in town or at the market.

    Guide: Balinese temples and culture

A Hindu island, day to day

Bali is the only Hindu-majority province in Indonesia. Religion here is not a backdrop for visitors: it sets the rhythm of the days, the villages and the calendar.

“The three causes of well-being”

Tri Hita Karana

Tri Hita Karana

“The three causes of well-being”: harmony between humans and the divine, among humans themselves, and between humans and nature. This philosophy organizes the village, the temple and the rice fields. UNESCO inscribed it in 2012 together with the subak irrigation system, as part of the cultural landscape of Bali.

Canang sari offerings

Small baskets of palm leaf filled with flowers, rice and sometimes a stick of incense, placed every day in front of houses, shops, temples and even on the pavements. They are handmade, most often by the women of the family.

The black and white poleng

This checkered cloth tied around statues, sacred trees and shrines evokes the balance between opposing forces, good and evil, day and night. It marks a protected place: do not touch it.

At the temple

Inside a temple (pura): the rules to follow

  1. Shoulders and knees covered, for men and women alike.
  2. Sarong tied at the waist and a sash (selendang): often lent or rented at the entrance.
  3. Do not step on an offering placed on the ground, or step over it too closely.
  4. Do not climb on walls or altars, do not stand higher than a priest.
  5. Stay back during a ceremony, and only photograph worshippers from a distance and discreetly.
  6. Temples ask women who are menstruating not to enter: the rule is posted at the entrance.

The short answers

How many days should I plan for Bali?

Ten days allow three bases without rushing. With two weeks, you add the north and an island; beyond that, you take your time in the east and the villages.

Do I get the visa on arrival or online?

Both are possible for the e-VoA (IDR 500,000, 30 days). Applying online before departure saves time at the airport. The IDR 150,000 tourist levy is paid separately.

Can I rent a scooter without a motorcycle license?

Rental shops often do it, but it is illegal without an international permit with the motorcycle category, and travel insurance may refuse to cover an accident. A driver by the day is the safest alternative.

Is Bali expensive?

It can be done on a small budget in guesthouses and warungs, or cost as much as in Europe in a villa. The ranges in the Budget section give an order of magnitude, item by item.

What happens if my stay falls during Nyepi?

No flights for 24 hours and no going out in the street: you stay at the hotel. Avoid having a flight that day and plan for food, which hotels usually arrange.

Should I book accommodation in advance?

In July, in August and over the year-end holidays, yes, especially in Uluwatu and Ubud. The rest of the year, booking the first nights is often enough.
