Bali in July: weather, crowds, prices and what to know
July brings together the best weather of the year and the highest visitor numbers. It rains very little, nights are cooler, the sea is often beautiful and surf in full season. On the other side: the European and Australian summer vacations fill the south and Ubud, and prices rise. The right move is to book early and spend time in the east.

What July changes on the ground
The sea is generally beautiful and surf in full season on the Bukit. The water cools around Nusa Penida. Many rice fields are harvested or fallow, others green depending on the valley. Hikes are in the best conditions, the roads of the south saturated.
- Swimming: good conditions, strong currents on the surf beaches. Sanur and Nusa Dua are the calmest for children.
- Snorkeling and diving: good visibility in Amed and Tulamben. Around Nusa Penida, the water gets colder; the sunfish (mola mola) period is often cited there from July, with no guarantee of sightings.
- Surf: high season on the Bukit and the west coast, with lots of people in the water at the well-known spots.
- Rice fields: less green in many valleys, between harvests and fallow. Sidemen and Jatiluwih often keep cultivated plots, depending on the subak.
- Hikes: among the best conditions of the year for Batur, Agung with a guide, Sidemen and Munduk.
- Roads and waterfalls: traffic jams in the south, between Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu. Waterfalls with a lower flow.
Crowds and prices in July
July opens the high season. The French summer vacations start in early July, and the Australian school vacations also fall in July. The most sought-after accommodation is fully booked weeks in advance and prices are at the top of the annual range.
The differences between regions are big: Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu and central Ubud are the busiest, while Amed, Sidemen and Munduk stay quieter and cheaper. Book accommodation, drivers and boats early, and head to the well-known sites early in the morning.
To estimate the extra cost of the high season, see the Bali travel budget guide and test your assumptions in the budget calculator.
July events
July is kite season: the Bali Kite Festival is generally held in July at Padang Galak, near Sanur, with large traditional pieces flown by village teams. The Denpasar arts festival often continues until mid-July.
The dates of these two events are set every year; ask locally or at the tourist office. Galungan and Kuningan, on the 210-day cycle of the Balinese calendar, fall in July in some years. Their meaning is explained in Balinese temples and culture.
What to do in Bali in July
Make the most of the dry weather while avoiding the saturated areas: diving and snorkeling in Amed, walks in Sidemen, sunrise on Batur, kites in Sanur. Keep the Bukit for surf early in the morning, before the crowds.
- Amed: snorkeling and diving, the Tulamben wreck, a fishing village atmosphere far from the crowds of the south. See Amed.
- Sidemen: rice fields and walks facing Agung, in one of the quietest valleys on the island. See Sidemen.
- Sanur: kites above Padang Galak, a calm sea for children.
- Batur or Agung: a night climb, in the best conditions of the year.
Who July is the right month for
July suits surfers, hikers, divers and families tied to school vacations. It suits small budgets, travelers who book late and those looking for very green rice fields less well.
Families
An ideal climate for children. Book early, choose Sanur or the east rather than Canggu, and limit long drives.
Surfers
High season on the Bukit and the west coast. Surf at dawn to avoid the crowds in the water.
Divers
Good visibility in Amed and Tulamben. Around Nusa Penida, colder water and a period often cited for sunfish.
Hikers
Among the best conditions of the year for Batur, Agung and the north. Bring a warm layer.
Small budgets
A difficult month: high prices. The east, the north and homestays keep the bill down.
Honeymoon
Ideal weather, but book the villa several months in advance and prefer the quiet regions.
The 3-week itinerary gives plenty of room to the east and the north. To go straight to the east coast, see airport → Amed, and the packing list for the fleece for the climbs.
