Where to stay in Bali: which area for which trip, and at what price
In Bali, accommodation is less about the room than about the place: a quiet or noisy street, a beach on foot or twenty minutes away by scooter make for two different trips. This page helps you choose the region; eight pages then detail neighborhoods, types of accommodation and observed ranges.

In brief
- First trip: Ubud for culture, then Sanur or Uluwatu for the sea.
- Quiet: Sidemen in the rice fields, Amed by the reef. Surf: Canggu or Uluwatu. Family: Sanur.
- Observed range for a comfortable double room: IDR 600,000 to 2,500,000 (≈ €30 to €125) depending on the region.
- The neighborhood matters more than the room: read the map, not the name of the listing.
For a first trip, stay in Ubud and then by the sea, in Sanur or Uluwatu. For quiet, Sidemen or Amed; for surfing, Canggu or Uluwatu; for a family, Sanur. For the same comfort, the east and Ubud cost less than Seminyak and Uluwatu.
Bali is small on the map but slow on the road: changing neighborhood for dinner can cost an hour. The destinations pages tell you what each region offers the trip; the “where to stay” pages only talk about where to drop your bag: neighborhoods, noise at night, walking distances, types of accommodation and prices.
No hotel is named and no price is attributed to any property. The amounts are observed ranges for a double room, outside high season peaks, converted at €1 ≈ IDR 20,000. To put them into a complete budget, see the budget guide or the budget calculator.

Which region for which trip
Your profile decides the region, the region the type of accommodation. A first trip often combines Ubud and a base by the sea; a family does well to choose Sanur; surfers go to Canggu or Uluwatu; divers to Amed; couples looking for quiet to Sidemen.
| Profile | Recommended region | Type of accommodation | Range per night |
|---|---|---|---|
| First trip | Ubud, then Sanur or Uluwatu | Homestay or hotel with pool | IDR 600,000 to 1,500,000 (≈ €30 to €75) |
| Family | Sanur, center or south beach | Garden hotel, family rooms, villa | IDR 700,000 to 1,600,000 (≈ €35 to €80) |
| Surfer | Uluwatu (Bingin, Padang Padang), Canggu (Batu Bolong, Echo Beach) | Guesthouse near the spot | IDR 300,000 to 700,000 (≈ €15 to €35) |
| Diver | Amed (Jemeluk, Lipah) | Guesthouse linked to a dive center | IDR 200,000 to 1,200,000 (≈ €10 to €60) |
| Digital nomad | Canggu (Berawa, Pererenan), Ubud | Guesthouse or villa by the month, wifi tested | IDR 800,000 to 2,000,000 (≈ €40 to €100) |
| Couple | Sidemen, Ubud (Sayan), Uluwatu (Pecatu) | Ecolodge or villa with pool | IDR 600,000 to 4,000,000 (≈ €30 to €200) |
| Tight budget | Ubud, Amed, Sidemen | Balinese homestay, hostel | IDR 200,000 to 500,000 (≈ €10 to €25) |
Two regions are not always enough to decide: on a two-week stay, most travelers sleep in three or four bases. The itineraries give the sequence, the transfers the driving time between two places to stay.
The eight regions to stay in
Eight regions hold most of the offer: Ubud in the center; Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu on the southwest coast and the Bukit; Sanur on the southeast coast; Amed and Sidemen in the east; Nusa Penida facing Sanur. Each page compares three to five neighborhoods.

- Center
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Ubud
The center to do everything on foot, Penestanan and Nyuh Kuning for quiet, Sayan for the view: the neighborhood matters more than the room.

- Southwest
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Canggu
Batu Bolong to live on foot, Berawa for space, Pererenan for relative quiet: everywhere, scooters and construction sites are part of the stay.

- Southwest
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Seminyak
Restaurants and boutiques on foot, a wide beach, villas everywhere: the most urban base on the coast, more expensive than Canggu for the same comfort.

- Bukit peninsula
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Uluwatu
Bingin and Padang Padang for surf, Pecatu for the cliffs, Jimbaran for a family: on the Bukit, you choose your beach before your room.

- Southeast coast
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Sanur
A seafront promenade, a calm sea behind the reef, garden hotels: the simplest base for a family or a first night.

- East
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Amed
A coast of fishing villages facing the reef: Jemeluk for snorkeling on foot, Bunutan and Lipah for the view, Selang for silence.

- East
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Sidemen
Guesthouses in the rice fields and lodges facing Agung, no nightlife: you go to bed early, dine where you stay and pay less than in Ubud.

- Islands
- Where to stay
Where to stay in Nusa Penida
Ped and the north coast for the harbors and warungs, Crystal Bay to set off early for the cliffs, the east for silence: on the island, the road decides.
What makes prices vary
Six factors make up most of the price of a night: the season, the view, the pool, air conditioning, the real distance to the beach and the neighborhood. For the same comfort, a room facing the sea or the valley costs noticeably more than a garden-side room in the same property.
| Factor | What changes | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Season | July, August and late December push prices up | Book early, or aim for May, June, September |
| View | Sea, valley or rice field: often the first price gap | Compare the two room categories |
| Pool | Shared or private, it changes the category | A shared pool is often enough |
| Air conditioning | Essential on the coast, optional at altitude | A fan in Sidemen or Ubud |
| Beach | The first streets cost more | Check the walking distance on the map |
| Neighborhood | Seminyak and Canggu above Ubud, the east below | Choose the region before the room |
In hotels, some rates are shown excluding tax and service: check that the final amount is the one you will pay.
The pitfalls of listings
The pitfalls recur from one region to another: misleading photos, “10 minutes from the beach” that means 25, noise from scooters and construction, humidity and mold in the rainy season, a deposit requested on arrival, and undeclared rentals. All of them can be spotted before you pay.
- Misleading photos: wide angle, retouched view, rice field built on since. Look at travelers’ photos, with dates, rather than those of the listing.
- “10 minutes from the beach”: often by scooter, at off-peak times. On foot or at rush hour, allow more; measure it yourself on the map.
- Noise: main street, bar, beach club, construction next door, roosters. Ask the host where the room is and whether work is under way.
- Humidity and mold: in the rainy season, closed rooms and valleys hold the water. Recent reviews mention it; a musty smell does not show in a photo.
- The deposit: some villas ask for a deposit on arrival, in cash. Have it specified before booking, with the conditions for its return, and photograph the condition of the place.
- Undeclared rentals: in Bali, tourist accommodation must be licensed. Some listings are not; in case of an inspection or a dispute, the traveler has little recourse.
When to book, cancel, pay
Book several months ahead for July, August and the year-end holidays; a few weeks are enough the rest of the year. Prefer free cancellation, even if it costs a little more. On the spot, pay in rupiah rather than euros: the conversion offered by the card terminal almost always costs more.
| Period | When to book |
|---|---|
| July and August | Several months ahead: well-located places go first |
| Late December and early January | Several months ahead, despite the rainy season |
| May, June, September, October | A few weeks ahead |
| Rainy season outside the holidays | A few days to a few weeks, with free cancellation |
- Free cancellation: the rule on a trip with several bases. A delayed flight or a crossing cancelled by the swell shifts all the following nights.
- Pay in rupiah: when the terminal offers euros, refuse and choose IDR; your bank applies its own rate.
- Pay in advance or on the spot: non-refundable rates are cheaper, but with no way back.
- Nyepi: on the day of silence, you do not leave your accommodation; choose one where you can spend the day. See best time to visit Bali.
