Where to stay in Uluwatu: a beach, a staircase, a room

The Bukit peninsula is a limestone plateau lined with cliffs, with coves at the bottom of staircases and well-known surf spots. Distances are short but nothing is done on foot, except in Bingin. The right accommodation depends on the beach you want to reach every day. This page compares the areas, the types and the observed ranges.

In brief

  • Bingin and Padang Padang for surf and a few places on foot, Pecatu for the view, Jimbaran for a family.
  • Everywhere on the Bukit, you need a scooter or a driver to go out for dinner and reach the beaches.
  • Observed range for a comfortable double room: IDR 900,000 to 2,500,000 (≈ €45 to €125).
  • Count the steps: many rooms in Bingin are reached by a cliff staircase.

In Uluwatu, stay in Bingin or Padang Padang for surf and a few restaurants on foot, on the Pecatu cliffs for the view, in Jimbaran for a family that wants a calm bay near the airport.

Uluwatu refers at once to the temple, a wave and, by extension, the whole southwest of the Bukit. The beaches and the temple are described on the Uluwatu page; here, you choose the area to sleep in and the type of room.

The prices below are observed ranges, not the rates of any one property. The budget guide puts them into the cost of the stay, and the airport → Uluwatu page gives the driving times.

Uluwatu’s areas, one by one

Four areas count: Bingin, a surfers’ village clinging to the cliff; Padang Padang, around the cove and the Labuan Sait bridge; Pecatu, the plateau between the beaches and the temple; Jimbaran, the bay on the west coast, further north. To the east, Ungasan and Melasti offer isolated villas.

Bingin

Rooms and warungs stacked on the cliff, above a surf beach. It is the only area where you live partly on foot, by stairs and paths. At night, you hear the swell and sometimes the neighboring construction from dawn. Heavy suitcases are a real issue: ask how many steps there are.

Padang Padang and Labuan Sait

Around the small Padang Padang cove and the main road running alongside it: cafés, surf schools, guesthouses. More shops than in Bingin, more traffic too. Rooms on the road side hear the scooters; those in the lanes, much less.

Pecatu and the plateau

The plateau between the beaches and the temple: large villas, cliff-top hotels, wide roads that are often dark in the evening. You sleep in quiet, with an ocean view at the cliff-edge addresses. Everything is done by vehicle: 5 to 15 minutes to reach a beach or a restaurant.

Jimbaran, on the west side

North of the Bukit, a bay with soft sand, a calmer sea and fish restaurants on the beach. It is the choice for a family, or for a last night before a flight: the airport is close. Far from the southwest surf spots, you need a vehicle to reach them.

Types of accommodation in Uluwatu

The Bukit mixes surfer guesthouses, cliff bungalows, villas with pools on the plateau and large hotels on the cliffs. Balinese homestays exist in the inland villages. Chain hotels are concentrated towards Jimbaran and the southern cliffs.

Types of accommodation in Uluwatu: what you gain, what you lose, observed range per night
TypeYou gainYou loseObserved range
Balinese homestayPrice, a family welcomeFar from the beaches, no viewIDR 300,000 to 600,000 (≈ €15 to €30)

Chain hotelPool, services, shuttleIsolation, you pay for everything at the hotelIDR 1,500,000 to 6,000,000 (≈ €75 to €300)

HostelPrice, meeting other surfersDormitory, often far from the beachIDR 100,000 to 300,000 (≈ €5 to €15) per bed

For a surf stay, a guesthouse near the spot gains you more than a beautiful room: you leave at dawn without looking for a place to park the scooter. For a restful stay, a villa on the plateau reverses the logic.

How much a night costs in Uluwatu

Three price levels per night for a double room: the surfer guesthouse on a tight budget, the room with a pool or a view for comfortable, the cliffs for upscale.

  • Budget, per night

    ≈ €15 to €35

    IDR 300,000 to 700,000

Surfer guesthouse or homestay, fan or air conditioning, no view

  • Comfortable, per night

    ≈ €45 to €125

    IDR 900,000 to 2,500,000

Bungalow with shared pool, or room with a sea view

  • High end, per night

    ≈ €150 to €500

    IDR 3,000,000 to 10,000,000

Villa with private pool or cliff-top hotel

Observed ranges per night for a double room, outside the July-August and holiday peaks: orders of magnitude, not the prices of any one property. €1 ≈ IDR 20,000 (mid-October 2026, rounded).

On the Bukit, the ocean view sets the price much more than the floor space. In July and August, dry season and peak crowds, the ranges rise and the rooms near the spots go early.

What to check before booking in Uluwatu

Check the real access, cliff stairs or an unlit path; the road to the nearest beach; the water, sometimes delivered by tanker on the limestone plateau; and whether there is parking for the scooter. For remote work, ask for a speed test.

  • Hot water and pressure: water on the Bukit is sometimes delivered by tanker, pressure varies.
  • Generator: useful on the plateau, where power cuts happen.
  • Mosquito nets: fewer mosquitoes than in the rice fields, but gardens keep some.
  • Air conditioning or fan: the cliff breeze helps; inland, air conditioning is still preferable.
  • Access: number of steps, lit path, car to the door.
  • Noise: construction next door, main road, cliff bar in the evening.
  • Wifi: recent speed test, backup connection if you work.

Common mistakes in Uluwatu

The typical mistakes: booking far from the beach you want thinking that “everything is close”, underestimating the Bingin stairs, and arriving without transport. On the Bukit, every meal is a ride, and night falls early on poorly lit roads.

  1. Thinking everything is next door: 10 minutes by scooter between two beaches becomes 30 by car at sunset.
  2. Booking in Bingin with big suitcases: some accesses have several hundred steps.
  3. Arriving without a scooter or a booked driver: on the plateau, ride-hailing cars are rare in the evening.
  4. Choosing Uluwatu for family swimming: the southwest beaches are surf spots, Jimbaran is safer.
