What October changes on the ground

The sea is generally calm and clear, especially on the east coast. The west coast surf stays good, with more variable conditions at the end of the month. The rice fields turn green again in some valleys. Hikes are still good, waterfalls at their lowest before the rains.

  • Swimming: good conditions on most coasts; Sanur and Amed are the calmest.
  • Snorkeling and diving: good visibility in Amed and Tulamben; in Nusa Penida, the water warms up and the period often cited for sunfish comes to an end.
  • Surf: the season is still active on the Bukit and in Canggu, with more variable winds at the end of the month.
  • Rice fields: depending on the subak, young plants and flooded plots before the rainy season, resting fields elsewhere.
  • Hikes: Batur and Agung remain doable; better to aim for the first half of the month for Agung.
  • Roads and waterfalls: dry roads, dense traffic in the south. Waterfalls at their lowest flow of the year.

Crowds and prices in October

October is an in-between month: prices in the middle of the annual range and moderate visitor numbers. Two peaks: early October, with the end of the Australian school holidays, and the end of the month, when the French All Saints holidays begin.

Outside these two periods, accommodation is easy to find, even in Canggu and Uluwatu. During the All Saints holidays, family places are booked a few weeks in advance. Orders of magnitude by profile are in the Bali travel budget guide; the budget calculator lets you cost your stay.

October events

The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, created in 2004, is generally held in October, sometimes running into the first days of November: talks, readings and concerts. Galungan and Kuningan fall in October in some years, according to the Balinese calendar.

The festival dates are announced each year by its organizers; Ubud is then livelier and more in demand. Temple and village ceremonies continue as they do all year; the customs are in Balinese temples and culture.

What to do in Bali in October

October lends itself to the sea and the coast: surf and sunsets in Canggu, diving and snorkeling in Amed, the Lake Bratan temples early in the morning, talks at the Ubud festival. Keep physical activities for the morning at the end of the month.

  1. Canggu: surf for all levels, black sand beaches, sunsets on the west coast. See Canggu.
  2. Amed: snorkeling from the beach and diving on the Tulamben wreck, on a generally calm sea. See Amed.
  3. Lake Bratan: the Ulun Danu Bratan temple early in the morning, when the mist lifts.
  4. Ubud: a day at the writers festival if your dates coincide, rice fields at dawn.

Who October is the right month for

October suits divers, surfers, couples and families during the All Saints holidays. It suits hikers aiming for Agung at the end of the month and travelers who cope poorly with humid heat a little less well.

  • Families

The French All Saints holidays fall at the end of the month, with weather that is still fine. Sanur and Amed offer a calm sea.

  • Surfers

Still the season for the west coast and the Bukit, with more changeable conditions at the end of the month.

  • Divers

A good month for Amed and Tulamben, often calm sea. Nusa Penida stays in good condition.

  • Hikers

Batur and Sidemen without difficulty; Agung preferably at the start of the month.

  • Small budgets

Average prices outside the All Saints holidays. The homestays of Amed remain among the cheapest on the island.

  • Honeymoon

A good month to combine coast and interior, provided you like heat at the end of the month.

The 7-day itinerary is enough for a first glimpse. To arrive directly on the west coast, see airport → Canggu, and the packing list for a trip at the end of the dry season.
