What June changes on the ground

The dry season favors the sea and hikes. Surf works on the Bukit and the west coast. The sea is generally calm in Amed and Sanur. The rice fields are at very different stages depending on the valley. Dry roads, waterfalls with a more modest flow.

  • Swimming: good conditions, but strong currents on the surf beaches of the Bukit and the west coast. Sanur and Nusa Dua remain the calmest.
  • Snorkeling and diving: good visibility in Amed, Tulamben and Nusa Penida. The water can cool around Nusa Penida from the middle of the year.
  • Surf: high season on the Bukit (Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin) and in Canggu, for experienced surfers on the reefs.
  • Rice fields: green, golden or harvested, according to each subak’s own calendar. Jatiluwih and Sidemen often show several stages at once.
  • Hikes: a very good month for Batur, Agung with a guide, the lakes and forests of Munduk.
  • Roads and waterfalls: dry roads, heavier traffic in the south at the end of the month. Waterfalls accessible, with a lower flow than in the rainy season.

Crowds and prices in June

June starts in the shoulder season and ends at the start of the high season. Accommodation prices move from the middle to the top of the annual range as the Australian school vacations approach, in late June, then the European summer, in early July.

The first half of the month remains the most attractive: easy bookings, less crowded beaches and spots. For the end of the month, book accommodation in Uluwatu, Canggu and Ubud several weeks ahead. Orders of magnitude are in the Bali travel budget guide, and the budget calculator lets you compare.

June events

The Bali Arts Festival, Pesta Kesenian Bali, generally opens in mid-June in Denpasar and lasts about a month: opening parade, dances, gamelan music and crafts. The dates are announced every year. Galungan and Kuningan fall in June in some years, according to the Balinese calendar.

Created in 1979, the festival’s main venue is the Taman Werdhi Budaya cultural center in Denpasar. The performances draw a mostly Balinese audience: it is a good chance to see village troupes away from the tourist stages. The cultural context is in Balinese temples and culture.

What to do in Bali in June

June lends itself to surf and the cliffs of Uluwatu, the lakes and waterfalls of Munduk, Batur at sunrise and an evening at the Denpasar arts festival. It is also a good month for Nusa Penida before the summer crowds.

  1. Uluwatu: surf on the Bukit, beaches at the foot of the cliffs, the temple and kecak at sunset. See Uluwatu.
  2. Munduk: lakes Bratan and Tamblingan, forests and waterfalls, with cool nights. See Munduk.
  3. Denpasar: an evening at the arts festival, at the Taman Werdhi Budaya center.
  4. Nusa Penida: cliffs and mantas, on a sea that is generally calm in the morning.

Who June is the right month for

June suits surfers, hikers, divers and couples who want the dry season without the high season. Families tied to the French school calendar will have to wait for July; small budgets should aim for the first half of the month.

  • Families

Good climate, but the French school year is not over: summer vacations start in early July. June suits children not yet in school.

  • Surfers

High season on the Bukit and the west coast. The reefs require an experienced level; beginners go to Kuta or Canggu.

  • Divers

Good visibility in Amed, Tulamben and Nusa Penida. Bring a slightly thicker wetsuit around Nusa Penida.

  • Hikers

An excellent month for Batur, Agung and Munduk. A warm layer is essential for night climbs.

  • Small budgets

The first half of the month is more affordable. The east and north cost less than the south.

  • Honeymoon

A very good month: dry weather, sunsets over the Bukit cliffs, crowds still contained.

The 3-week itinerary goes through the north and the coast. To reach the Bukit on arrival, see the airport → Uluwatu transfer, and the packing list for cool nights at altitude.
