Bali in November: weather, crowds, prices and what to know

November opens the rainy season. The storms return, often at the end of the day, the air is hot and humid, and the island turns green again. In exchange, crowds are light after the French All Saints holidays and prices drop markedly. A month for flexible travelers, who organize their days around the weather and favor bases where the rain is little nuisance.

Mornings are often clear, the heat rises toward midday, clouds build up in the afternoon and storms break at the end of the day or in the evening. Rain is more frequent in Ubud and on the highlands than in the south. A few gray days in a row are possible, especially at the end of the month.

October received 67.9 mm over 4.8 days; December doubles again, with 299.3 mm over 15.9 days. November is therefore a month of entry into the rainy season, milder than the ones that follow.

What November changes on the ground

The sea becomes more variable, especially in the west. The rice fields fill with water and turn green again. The summits are more often covered at daybreak. Roads become slippery in the storms, and the waterfalls regain their flow.

  • Swimming: still good in the morning; the west coast becomes rougher and its beaches start to receive litter washed up by the sea. Sanur stays the calmest.
  • Snorkeling and diving: Amed and Tulamben remain reliable; visibility drops after big storms. Crossings to Nusa Penida can be disrupted by rough seas.
  • Surf: transition toward the east coast season, from Keramas to the Sanur reefs, while the Bukit becomes more irregular.
  • Rice fields: depending on the subak, flooding and planting: it is the time for reflections in the terraces.
  • Hikes: Batur doable, view more uncertain. Agung becomes inadvisable as the rains set in. Low-altitude walks are done early.
  • Roads and waterfalls: take care on a scooter in a storm. Waterfalls regain their flow, but some access paths are slippery.

Crowds and prices in November

November is one of the calmest months of the year. After the end of the French All Saints holidays, in early November, visitor numbers fall and accommodation prices move to the bottom of the annual range. Discounts on long stays are frequent.

It is the right time for a villa with a pool that would be out of budget in summer. Last-minute bookings are easy, except during the last days of the All Saints holidays. Orders of magnitude are in the Bali travel budget guide; the budget calculator lets you adjust for the season.

November events

November has no major fixed-date event in Bali. The Ubud writers festival runs into the first days of the month in some years. Galungan and Kuningan, on the 210-day cycle of the Balinese calendar, fall in November in some years.

Check the year’s dates before you leave: during Galungan, villages are covered with penjor and families return home, which sometimes slows down services. The meaning of these festivals is explained in Balinese temples and culture.

What to do in Bali in November

Focus on the mornings and on activities that benefit from the return of water: flooded rice fields around Ubud, waterfalls, the calm sea of Sanur, diving in Amed. Keep the afternoons for things done under cover.

  1. Ubud: flooded rice fields at dawn, temples, workshops and cooking classes in the afternoon. See Ubud.
  2. Sanur: a calm base, a sea protected by the reef, a coastal promenade. See Sanur.
  3. Waterfalls of the center and Munduk: flow restored, to visit in the morning and never right after a storm.
  4. Amed: snorkeling and diving on the driest coast, with a day of margin.

Who November is the right month for

November suits small budgets, flexible travelers, lovers of rice fields and couples looking for calm. It suits hikers aiming for Agung and divers who want Nusa Penida in the best conditions less well.

  • Families

Possible at the start of the month, with the end of the All Saints holidays. Sanur is the simplest base; remember the repellent.

  • Surfers

Transition toward the east coast. The schools of Kuta and Canggu still welcome beginners.

  • Divers

Amed and Tulamben remain safe. Nusa Penida depends more and more on the sea.

  • Hikers

Low-altitude walks, Batur with no guarantee of a view, Agung inadvisable at the end of the month.

  • Small budgets

One of the best months: low prices, availability, negotiation possible.

  • Honeymoon

A villa in the rice fields at a reasonable price, no crowds; you have to accept the evening storms.

The 7-day itinerary suits a short stay. To reach Sanur on arrival, see the airport → Sanur transfer, and the packing list for rain gear.
