Where to stay in Ubud: the right neighborhood before the nice room

In Ubud, two rooms at the same price can make for two opposite stays: one at the end of a quiet lane ten minutes’ walk from the palace, the other above a street where scooters go by until midnight. This page compares the neighborhoods, the types of accommodation and the observed price ranges.

In brief

  • First stay: a lane set back from the center, or Penestanan and Nyuh Kuning, within walking distance of the palace.
  • Sayan and Tegalalang offer the view, but every meal and every outing requires a vehicle.
  • Observed range for a comfortable double room: IDR 600,000 to 1,500,000 (≈ €30 to €75).
  • In the rainy season, ask whether the room smells damp and whether laundry dries: the valleys hold the water.

For a first stay in Ubud, sleep in a lane set back from the center or in Penestanan and Nyuh Kuning, within walking distance of the palace. For the view, Sayan, above the Ayung valley, if you accept depending on a vehicle.

Ubud is a cluster of villages linked by three very busy streets: the neighborhood decides whether you walk or depend on a driver. What the region offers to see is on the Ubud page; here, we only talk about where to drop your bag.

The prices given below are observed ranges, not the rates of any one property. The budget guide puts them back into the total cost of a trip, and the airport → Ubud page explains how to arrive without losing your evening.

Ubud’s neighborhoods, one by one

Five areas share most of the rooms: the center, around the palace and the Monkey Forest; Penestanan, on the ridge to the west; Nyuh Kuning, south of the forest; Sayan, above the Ayung; Tegalalang, to the north. The further you get from the palace, the wider the view and the more indispensable a vehicle becomes.

The center: Monkey Forest, Hanoman, Bisma, Goutama

The streets running down from the palace to the Monkey Forest concentrate restaurants, spas and shops. Everything is on foot, in heavy traffic. Lanes such as Goutama or the top of Bisma keep quiet homestays. At night, you hear scooters until around midnight, then the roosters before dawn.

Penestanan

A ridge village surrounded by rice fields, west of the Campuhan river, reached by a long staircase. You get to the center on foot in 15 to 25 minutes, going down then up again. At night, it is frogs and geckos. Not well suited to heavy suitcases and tired legs.

Nyuh Kuning

A residential village south of the Monkey Forest, with family guesthouses and a few cafés. You reach the center on foot by crossing or skirting the forest, in 15 to 20 minutes. Nights are quiet; the gamelan rehearsals at the bale banjar in the evening are part of the setting.

Sayan and the Ayung valley

Villas and hotels perched above the Ayung: the view justifies the prices, but nothing is done on foot, and the center is 10 to 20 minutes away by car. At night, the river and the insects; sometimes a ceremony at the village temple.

Tegalalang and the north

Around the terraced rice fields, 20 to 30 minutes by car north of the center. You sleep facing the rice fields, beside a road that is busy by day, with nothing on foot in the evening. Keep it for two quiet nights at the end of a stay, not for a first discovery.

Types of accommodation in Ubud

Ubud is the region of Balinese homestays and family guesthouses: you sleep in a family compound, around the courtyard and the family temple. Villas with pools are on the outskirts, chain hotels are rare. Bamboo ecolodges are concentrated in the valleys, to the west and north.

Villa with private pool or hotel over the Ayung valley

Observed ranges per night for a double room, outside the July-August and holiday peaks: orders of magnitude, not the prices of any one property. €1 ≈ IDR 20,000 (mid-October 2026, rounded).

For the same comfort, the center costs more than the villages on the outskirts, and a valley view pushes the price up much faster than the size of the room. In July, in August and over the year-end holidays, the ranges rise sharply.

What to check before booking in Ubud

Check four points specific to Ubud: the real access, stairs or a lane cars cannot use; street noise; humidity in the room in the rainy season; and hot water, sometimes solar and lukewarm in the evening. For remote work, ask for a recent speed test.

  • Hot water: electric or solar? Solar is lukewarm after a day of rain.
  • Generator: power cuts are rare in the center, more frequent on the edges of the valleys.
  • Mosquito net or screened windows: essential near rice fields and rivers.
  • Fan or air conditioning: a fan is often enough at altitude, not in a room without a draft.
  • Access: number of steps, car to the door or not, lighting on the path in the evening.
  • Noise: room on the street side or courtyard side, nearby temple, construction under way.
  • Wifi: ask for a recent speed test screenshot, and whether there is a workspace.

Common mistakes in Ubud

Most disappointments come from a misunderstood address: accommodation “in Ubud” located 30 minutes away by car, a promised rice field that has become a construction site, a hundred-step staircase with the suitcases. Read the map, not the name of the listing.

  1. Booking “Ubud” without looking at the map: Tegalalang, Payangan or Mas are listed under Ubud on booking platforms, 20 to 40 minutes from the center.
  2. Choosing a rice field view from an old photo: the rice fields near the center are being built on fast. Look at travelers’ photos, with dates.
  3. Sleeping right on the main street to “be in the center”: a lane two minutes away changes your nights.
  4. Taking an isolated villa without planning transport: every dinner becomes a ride with a driver.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best neighborhood to stay in Ubud?

For a first stay, a quiet lane in the center or the villages of Penestanan and Nyuh Kuning: you stay within walking distance of the palace without suffering the street noise. Sayan suits a restful stay, with a vehicle.

How much does a night cost in Ubud?

About €30 to €75 a night (IDR 600,000 to 1,500,000) for a double room with a pool, observed range. A homestay costs less, a villa over the valley much more.

Do you need a pool in Ubud?

It is not essential: Ubud is at altitude and less hot than the coast. A small pool is still pleasant in the afternoon, after a walk in the rice fields.

Can you stay in Ubud without a scooter?

Yes, if you stay in the center, in Penestanan or in Nyuh Kuning: everything is on foot, and a driver is enough for excursions. Outside these, in Sayan or Tegalalang, you need a vehicle for every outing.

How many nights should I book in Ubud?

Three to four nights, as the [Ubud page](/destinations/ubud) recommends. Book them in the same place: changing address within Ubud costs half a day for little difference.
