Where to stay in Canggu: choose your noise before your pool

Canggu was built in fifteen years on former rice fields, without an overall plan. You find everything there, from surfer hostels to villas with pools, but the map is misleading: the beach is rarely “two minutes away”, and your nights depend above all on the neighbors. This page compares the neighborhoods, the types of accommodation and the observed ranges.

In brief

  • Batu Bolong to do everything on foot, Berawa for a family, Pererenan for quieter nights.
  • The real distance to the beach is counted in streets to cross, not in the minutes advertised.
  • Observed range for a comfortable double room: IDR 800,000 to 2,000,000 (≈ €40 to €100).
  • For remote work, insist on a recent speed test and a backup connection.

In Canggu, stay in Batu Bolong for the beach and cafés on foot, in Berawa for a family or a long stay, in Pererenan for quieter nights.

Canggu has no center: it is a string of villages linked by narrow, congested roads. The surf, the cafés and life on the coast are described on the Canggu page; here, it is about choosing the street to sleep on.

The prices below are observed ranges, not the rates of any one property. The budget guide puts them into the cost of a stay, and the airport → Canggu page gives driving times by time of day.

Canggu’s neighborhoods, one by one

Four areas count: Batu Bolong, the lively heart around the beach of the same name; Berawa, more spread out and family-friendly; Pererenan, west of the river, still a little rural; Echo Beach, the seafront for experienced surfers. The villas of Umalas, set back, require a vehicle.

Batu Bolong

The street running down to the beach and its lanes concentrate surf schools, cafés and bars: you live on foot, which is rare in the south. In exchange, constant traffic until late and bars that carry far on weekends. A lane set back solves part of the problem.

Berawa

Between Batu Bolong and Seminyak, a newer, more spacious area, with supermarkets, international schools and big beach clubs on the seafront. Good for a family or a long stay. The beach is 5 to 15 minutes’ walk depending on the street, and the bass from the beach clubs can be heard some evenings.

Pererenan

On the other side of the river mouth, to the west: fields still, a slower pace, recent villas and guesthouses. Nights are quieter, but construction starts early in the morning. You reach Batu Bolong in 10 to 15 minutes by scooter, on an often busy road.

Echo Beach

The Batu Mejan seafront, facing a wave for experienced surfers and the sunsets. You sleep to the sound of the waves, with a few restaurants on foot. Not well suited to children swimming, and the choice of rooms remains limited.

Types of accommodation in Canggu

Canggu is the region of villas with pools, rented by the night or by the month, and of recent guesthouses designed for nomads. Balinese homestays still exist, set back from the main streets. Hostels target surfers, chain hotels are grouped towards Berawa.

How much a night costs in Canggu

Three price levels per night for a double room: the guesthouse set back on a tight budget, the hotel with a pool for comfortable, the villa for upscale.

  • Budget, per night

    ≈ €15 to €35

    IDR 300,000 to 700,000

Guesthouse or homestay set back, air conditioning, sometimes a small shared pool

  • Comfortable, per night

    ≈ €40 to €100

    IDR 800,000 to 2,000,000

Recent guesthouse or small shared villa, pool, desk

  • High end, per night

    ≈ €125 to €400

    IDR 2,500,000 to 8,000,000

Villa with private pool and staff, or seafront hotel

Observed ranges per night for a double room, outside the July-August and holiday peaks: orders of magnitude, not the prices of any one property. €1 ≈ IDR 20,000 (mid-October 2026, rounded).

Canggu costs more than Ubud for the same comfort. In July, in August and over the holidays, villas are booked up long in advance and the ranges rise sharply.

What to check before booking in Canggu

Check the construction site next door, the real walk to the beach, the quality of the wifi and whether there is a backup connection, then access to the villa by a lane that sometimes floods in the rainy season. Air conditioning is essential here, a fan alone rarely enough.

  • Hot water: check that it supplies every bathroom in a villa, not only the main one.
  • Generator or UPS: useful for nomads, short power cuts do happen.
  • Mosquito nets: the coast and the former rice fields remain humid.
  • Air conditioning: essential in the humid heat of the coast; ask whether it is billed separately on a monthly rate.
  • Access: lane passable by car or only by scooter, flooding in the rainy season.
  • Noise: construction next door, bar, beach club or neighborhood dogs; ask the host directly.
  • Wifi: recent speed test, fiber or 4G, backup connection, workspace.

Common mistakes in Canggu

The typical mistakes: believing a listing “5 minutes from the beach” without checking the map, booking a villa at the end of a lane with no car access, and forgetting the construction sites. Canggu changes fast: a rice field view photo may date from before the building opposite went up.

  1. Taking “5 minutes from the beach” literally: it is often by scooter, at off-peak times.
  2. Booking a villa without knowing whether a car can get to it: with suitcases, a scooter-only lane changes your arrival.
  3. Not asking whether there is a construction site next door: work starts early and lasts for months.
  4. Believing you will do everything on foot: outside Batu Bolong, every outing requires a scooter or ride-hailing.
