What May changes on the ground
The sea is calmer and clearer, crossings to Nusa Penida more regular. Surf on the west coast and the Bukit is in season. The rice fields are harvested in some valleys, replanted or still green in others. The trails are dry and the volcanoes more often clear at dawn.
- Swimming: good conditions on most coasts; stay alert to currents on the surf beaches of the west coast.
- Snorkeling and diving: visibility rising in Amed, Tulamben and Nusa Penida, where manta rays can be seen all year round.
- Surf: the season for the Bukit waves (Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin) and Canggu, with generally favorable winds in the morning.
- Rice fields: a varied landscape, from green to golden and freshly harvested fields, according to each subak’s calendar.
- Hikes: a good month for Batur, Agung with a guide, and the walks of Sidemen and Munduk.
- Roads and waterfalls: dry roads, waterfalls still fed after the rainy season.
Crowds and prices in May
May stays in the shoulder season: moderate visitor numbers and prices in the middle of the annual range. Demand rises during the French May public holidays, including Ascension, and the end of the French spring vacations at the start of the month. The most popular places in Uluwatu and Ubud are already booked in advance.
Prices are still far from those of July and August, and last-minute bookings remain possible outside the best-known places. Fast boat crossings to Nusa Penida are booked the day before or two days before. Orders of magnitude are in the Bali travel budget guide, and the budget calculator lets you adjust your stay.
May events
May has no major fixed-date event in Bali. Galungan and Kuningan, which follow the 210-day cycle of the Balinese calendar, fall in May in some years: find out the year’s dates before you leave.
Temple and village ceremonies take place all year round, and you often come across them on the road. They can slow traffic for a while: wait without honking. The customs are explained in Balinese temples and culture.
What to do in Bali in May
