Surfing in Bali: which spot for which level, and when

Bali made its name on reef waves reserved for seasoned surfers, but the island also has sandy beaches where you can learn safely. It all comes down to choosing the spot: a beginner on the Uluwatu reef puts themselves in danger, an advanced surfer in Kuta gets bored.

Key points

  • Beginners: Kuta and Batu Bolong, in Canggu, on a sandy bottom, with a school.
  • Advanced: Bingin, Padang Padang and Uluwatu, on the Bukit reef.
  • Dry season, from about April to October: regular swells on the Bukit and the west coast; rainy season: east coast.
  • The real dangers: rip currents, shallow reef at low tide, crowds at the peak.

This guide ranks the best-known spots on the west coast and the Bukit by level, explains the swell seasons and recalls the rules that prevent accidents and tension in the water. It names no school: there are schools on every beginner beach, and quality depends more on the instructor and group size than on the brand.

For a base, Canggu suits beginners and intermediates, Uluwatu advanced surfers. The journey between the two, Canggu → Uluwatu, crosses the traffic jams of the south: choose one base per level rather than going back and forth.

Bali surf spots, from beginner to advanced

Kuta, a long sandy beach, is the simplest spot to start. Batu Bolong, in Canggu, welcomes beginners and longboards, Echo Beach surfers who are progressing. On the Bukit, Bingin, Padang Padang and Uluwatu break on the reef and require a good level: watch them from the cliff before going in.

Bali surf spots by level: bottom, type of wave, for whom, watch out

KutaSandBeginnerCurrents, crowds, flying boards
Batu Bolong, CangguSand and rockBeginner, longboardLots of people in the water
Echo Beach, CangguRock and reefIntermediateHollower waves, rocks
BinginReefUpper intermediateReef exposed at low tide
Padang PadangReefAdvancedPowerful wave, shallow reef
UluwatuReefAdvancedAccess through the Suluban cave, currents
The level also depends on the size of the day’s swell: an intermediate spot becomes an experts’ spot when the swell grows.

Beginners progress better in Canggu or Kuta than in Uluwatu: the shallow reef and the currents of the Bukit do not forgive falls. Conversely, a good surfer finds on the Bukit some of the most renowned waves on the island, at the foot of the cliffs.

Swell seasons in Bali

In the dry season, from about April to October, regular swells and favorable winds make the Bukit and the west coast work, from Uluwatu to Canggu. In the rainy season, from November to March, the east coast, from Keramas to the Sanur reefs, takes over. The schools on the southern beaches welcome beginners all year round.

Learning to surf in Bali: schools and lessons

To learn, choose a school based on a sandy beach, in Kuta or Batu Bolong, with small groups, an instructor in the water and foam boards. Two or three lessons are enough to stand up; a week of regular lessons brings real progress.

  • Group size: a few students per instructor, not a dozen.
  • Instructor in the water, not just on the beach.
  • Foam board suited to your build, leash in good condition.
  • Briefing on currents and right of way before going in.
  • Time chosen according to the tide, not just the school’s schedule.

After a few lessons, board rental lets you continue alone on the same beaches. Avoid moving straight to reef spots: the step between a sandy beach and Bingin is bigger than it looks. To stay near the schools, see where to stay in Canggu.

Etiquette at the peak: the rules to know

The basic rule: the surfer closest to the peak, where the wave breaks, has priority. You do not take a wave already taken, you paddle out around the side, you keep hold of your board and you respect local surfers. Tension almost always comes from forgetting these rules.

  1. Priority to the surfer closest to the peak: if they go, you do not.
  2. Do not “drop in” on a wave already taken by someone else.
  3. Paddle back out around the side, away from the zone where the waves break.
  4. Never let go of your board when a wave comes: it becomes a projectile.
  5. Wait your turn at the peak rather than positioning yourself in front of everyone.
  6. Respect local surfers and schools: they are at home.

Beginner spots are sometimes more dangerous than reef spots, because boards and swimmers are numerous. Keep your distance from others, and get out of the water if the crowd becomes unmanageable.

The dangers of surfing in Bali: currents, reef, sun

Three dangers dominate: rip currents, which carry you out to sea; the shallow reef, especially at low tide, which cuts and injures; and crowds at the peak. Sun and dehydration come next. A beginner never surfs alone, and an advanced surfer spots the exits before going in.

The dangers of surfing in Bali and the reflexes that matter
DangerReflex
Rip currentDo not fight it: paddle or swim parallel to the beach, then come back
Reef at low tideSurf at high tide, reef booties, fall flat with your arms in front of your head
Coral cutCareful disinfection: wounds get infected quickly in a humid climate
Crowds at the peakDistance, right of way respected, get out if necessary
SunUV T-shirt, sunscreen, water before and after the session

Organizing a surf trip to Bali

A surf trip is built around one base per level: Canggu or Kuta to learn, Uluwatu for reef waves. Stay near the spot you are aiming for, surf early in the morning, and keep the afternoons for rest. For a week, the 7-day itinerary comes in a surf variant.

The 7-day itinerary keeps Uluwatu as a second base or switches to Canggu for beginners. On the Bukit, choose accommodation near the beach for your level: the peninsula is spread out, and every outing requires a scooter or a driver. A scooter with a board requires an international driving permit, a helmet and experience.

Lessons, board rental and journeys to the spots make up most of the surf budget: the budget guide helps you cost them. On the Bukit, the surfers’ areas, Bingin and Padang Padang, are compared on where to stay in Uluwatu.
