The options to get from Ubud to Munduk
A driver by the trip or by the day is the option to favor: the road is winding, there is little ride-hailing in the highlands, and a stop at the lakes is a must. A scooter remains possible for an experienced rider, in daylight and dry weather, without a suitcase.
| Mode | Time | Indicative price | Who it suits | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driver by the trip | Less than airport–Munduk (about 2 h 30) | Set in advance | Most travelers | Large suitcase, no problem |
| Driver for the day | A day with the visits | Set for the day and the route | Those who want to stop at Bratan or Jatiluwih | Large suitcase, no problem |
| Grab or Gojek ride-hailing (car) | Similar to a driver | Shown in the app, if a driver accepts | Light travelers, outbound | Depends on the category |
| Scooter | Variable | Rental in Ubud | Experienced riders, in dry weather | Backpack only |
To leave Munduk, ride-hailing is rare: as soon as you arrive, ask your accommodation to book the driver for the next leg, to the south, the airport or the north coast.
If you are prone to motion sickness, tell the driver before leaving: they can drive more gently in the bends and stop at the lakes, which split the climb in two. Keep a sweater within reach rather than at the bottom of the suitcase: the air cools noticeably at altitude.
The transfer, hour by hour
A typical day: leave Ubud early in the morning, climb to Bedugul, visit Ulun Danu Bratan before the groups, stop at the Candikuning market, then take the ridge road above Tamblingan to Munduk. Arrival in the late morning or early afternoon, before the mist.
| Moment | What happens |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Leave Ubud heading north, hill roads |
| Morning | Bedugul plateau; Ulun Danu Bratan temple, best at opening time |
| Late morning | Candikuning market: highland fruit and snacks |
| Noon | Ridge road above Tamblingan, then descent to Munduk |
| Afternoon | Check in, rest when the mist rises |
In rainy weather, give up the detours and go straight to Munduk: the lakes can be visited the next morning, when the sky is more often clear.
The pitfalls of the Ubud–Munduk transfer
The pitfalls: leaving late and driving in the mist or at night, underestimating motion sickness, arriving at Bratan in the middle of the day among the groups, and forgetting warm clothes. Rain is to be expected in every season in the highlands.
- Driving the lakes road at night: bends, fog, no lighting, as the Munduk page points out.
- Leaving without precautions if bends make you sick: sit in front, eat light, ask for breaks.
- Visiting Ulun Danu Bratan at noon: the temple is superb at opening time, crowded afterwards.
- Traveling in clothes for the south: in Munduk, evenings are cool. Keep a sweater within reach.
The smart alternative: make Munduk a stage, not an excursion
Do not try Munduk as a round trip from Ubud: the road outweighs the visit. Sleep there two or three nights, and fit the lakes in on the way up. With three weeks, rather arrive along the north coast, like the 3-week itinerary, to avoid any backtracking.
If time is short, prefer the Sidemen valley in the east, closer to Ubud and with no mountain road: see Ubud → Sidemen. Munduk is for those who like walking, and who accept rain and cool weather.
Leaving Munduk: to the south or the airport
From Munduk, the airport is about 2 h 30 away on the mountain road: never leave on the morning of a flight. Plan a last night in the south, in Sanur or on the Bukit, and leave Munduk in the morning to come down in daylight.
| Next leg | Advice |
|---|---|
| Flight the next day | Come down in the morning to Sanur or the Bukit, night in the south |
| Evening flight | Leave in the morning, with a wide margin: the road is slow |
| Back to Ubud | Leave in the morning, possible stop at the lakes |
| Sanur and Nusa Penida | Leave early: the 3-week itinerary links the road and the 30 to 45 min boat |
