Munduk in a day from Canggu: Sekumpul, Lake Tamblingan, Banyumala

From the Canggu coast, the Munduk mountains are far away: several hours of road out, as many back. The day is still possible if you accept leaving before dawn and seeing only three places. For many travellers, a night up there is a better choice. The times given here are indicative.

In short

Facts as of · sourced figures

You leave Canggu before dawn to beat the southern jams, drive straight to Sekumpul and go down to the falls in the late morning. Then you head back towards the lakes: Tamblingan for a walk along the shore, Banyumala for a swim in the late afternoon. The drive back to Canggu is often after dark.

Key points

  • Indicative times: the road from Canggu varies a lot with traffic in the south.
  • Allow roughly 2 h 30 to 3 h of road out, as much back, before any detour.
  • Sekumpul first, while the path is dry; the lakes afterwards, on the way back.
  • If you can, spend a night in Munduk: the day becomes two relaxed half-days.

Canggu is on the south-west coast, Munduk on a ridge in the north. In between, the road climbs through the Tabanan rice fields, passes the mountain lakes, then drops towards the north.

On the programme: Sekumpul, Lake Tamblingan and Banyumala. For the road, see Canggu to Munduk.

The day, indicative times

  1. 5 amLeave Canggu with the driver, ahead of the southern jams.

  4. 12:30 pmLunch on the Munduk ridge.
  5. 1:30 pmLake Tamblingan: the shore and the temple.
  6. 3 pmBanyumala: a short walk down and a swim if the flow allows.
  7. 4:30 pmThe road back to Canggu, arriving in the evening, often after dark.

How the day runs

You leave Canggu before dawn to beat the southern jams, drive straight to Sekumpul and go down to the falls in the late morning. Then you head back towards the lakes: Tamblingan for a walk along the shore, Banyumala for a swim in the late afternoon. The drive back to Canggu is often after dark.

It is the longest day trip on this site from Canggu. The order follows the road: the furthest point first, the lakes on the way back. If the morning runs late, Banyumala is the stop to drop: it is the easiest to come back to on another trip.

Who it suits

  • Fit walkers with only one day for the north.
  • Groups sharing a driver who accept a very early start.

Who it does not suit

  • Children and people with limited mobility: very long road and steep steps.
  • People prone to car sickness.
  • Anyone who can sleep in Munduk: it is better in every way.

Getting there: crossing the island, twice

Canggu to Munduk is published at roughly 2 h 30 to 3 h, as an estimate; Sekumpul, further north-east, adds more road. The hard parts are getting out of Canggu and Denpasar at rush hour, the mountain bends, and the drive back after dark in mist and traffic.

  • Car with a driver: the only sensible option for such a day.
  • Scooter: not advised, the fatigue of a night ride adds to the mountain roads.
  • Leaving before dawn saves time getting out of the south, often blocked in the morning.

What you see

The Sekumpul falls in their jungle amphitheatre, the wooded shore of Lake Tamblingan and its temple, then the Banyumala pool among the ferns. You see neither the Jatiluwih rice fields nor the Ulun Danu Bratan temple, though they are on the way: adding them would push the return back even further.

  • Sekumpul

Several falls, hundreds of steps, a village guide at the entrance.

  • Lake Tamblingan

The shore and the temple; the canoe with the village guides is optional.

  • Banyumala

A natural pool for swimming at normal flow; the water is cold.

At Lake Tamblingan, do not expect too much: in the afternoon, mist often covers the water, and the temple on the shore is a place of prayer. A short walk along the shore is enough; the canoe is best in the early morning.

What you pay for, and what you do not

The driver for a very long day is by far the biggest item, and it is negotiated accordingly. Add the Sekumpul entry and guide, the Banyumala entry, the village car parks and, if you like, the canoe at Tamblingan. All prices are given on site.

Mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is leaving Canggu mid-morning: you reach Sekumpul in the showers and get back late at night. Others: overloading the day with Bratan and Jatiluwih, following an unofficial roadside guide, and forgetting that it is cold at altitude.

  • Set the departure time with the driver the day before, before dawn.
  • At Sekumpul, take the guide at the entrance run by the village.
  • Bring a sweater, a windbreaker and a change of clothes.
  • Do not swim under the falls when the water is brown or strong.
