Crystal Bay: the beach where you finally sit down

Crystal Bay is a sandy bay lined with coconut palms on the west coast of Nusa Penida, facing a rocky islet. You swim, you snorkel straight from the beach, and you watch the sunset. After the cliffs and staircases of the rest of the island, it is the one place where you really sit down.

Key points

  • A sandy beach reached without stairs: the easiest on Nusa Penida.
  • Snorkelling from the beach when the sea is calm; stay inside the bay, the current picks up towards the point and the islet.
  • The sunset is watched from the beach, facing west.
  • Warungs and mask rental on site; prices announced on the spot.

Nusa Penida is a limestone island facing Sanur. Crystal Bay lies on its west coast, at the end of the road through the village of Sakti: a beach of pale sand, coconut palms, a small temple on the point and a rocky islet offshore.

What you do at Crystal Bay

You swim, you snorkel over the reef in the bay and you wait for the sunset. Boats anchor offshore for snorkelling trips, and some dive centres dive here. In the afternoon, the beach fills up with visitors finishing the west-coast loop.

  • The reef in the bay: reachable from the beach when the sea is calm, with reef fish and corals.
  • The islet offshore: a boat dive site with strong currents, to be done with a guide.
  • The warungs: drinks, simple meals, sun loungers and umbrellas for hire.
  • The sunset: facing west, from the sand.

Getting there

Crystal Bay lies at the end of the road that crosses the village of Sakti, on the west coast. From the harbour at Toyapakeh, it is one of the easiest roads on the island. The car park is behind the beach, a few steps from the sand.

  1. From Toyapakeh, on the north-west coast, take the road towards Sakti.
  2. Cross the village and follow the signs for Crystal Bay.
  3. Park at the car park behind the beach.
  4. Settle in the shade of a palm tree or a warung.

When to go

In the morning the bay is calm and the water clearer for snorkelling. Around midday, day-trip boats anchor offshore. Late afternoon is the busiest time, for the sunset. Check the marine forecast before you swim, as conditions change from one day to the next.

What to pair it with

Crystal Bay ends the west-coast loop: Kelingking early in the morning, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong next, then a swim here until sunset. If you sleep on the west side of the island, come back one morning too, before the day-trip boats, to snorkel.
