Kelingking: Nusa Penida’s famous view, best seen early

Kelingking is the dinosaur-head cliff plunging into turquoise water on the west coast of Nusa Penida. It is the most photographed viewpoint on the island. From the top, the view takes a few minutes; the path down to the beach is steep, vertiginous and subject to rules that change. Between 10 am and 3 pm, the crowd fills the whole viewpoint.

In short

Facts as of · sourced figures

From the upper viewpoint, the cliff forms a jagged ridge that plunges to the sea, with the beach far below. It is the postcard view. A path cut into the ridge leads down to the beach: uneven steps, sometimes mere holds in the rock, with bamboo handrails in places.

Key points

  • Arrive before 10 am: after that, day trips from Bali saturate the viewpoint.
  • The view from the top is enough for most visitors; the path down to the beach is steep and dangerous.
  • Beach access: ask at the entrance, it may be closed or limited to visitors with a guide.
  • Do not swim at the foot of the cliff: waves and currents there are violent.

Nusa Penida is a limestone island facing Sanur, reached by fast boat. Kelingking lies on its south-west coast: a narrow headland covered in vegetation that drops towards a white-sand beach pounded by the Indian Ocean swell.

To plan the crossing, see Sanur to Nusa Penida; to sleep on the island and set off before the crowd, where to stay on Nusa Penida.

What you see at Kelingking

From the upper viewpoint, the cliff forms a jagged ridge that plunges to the sea, with the beach far below. It is the postcard view. A path cut into the ridge leads down to the beach: uneven steps, sometimes mere holds in the rock, with bamboo handrails in places.

  • The upper viewpoint: the full view, shared with the crowd in the middle of the day.
  • The start of the path: a few dozen metres for a steeper view, without going all the way down.
  • The full descent: steep, exposed to the sun, only for walkers in very good shape.
  • The beach: heavy swell, currents, no rescue on site.

Getting there

Kelingking lies on the south-west coast of the island, far from the northern harbours. You get there by car with a driver or by scooter, on narrow inland roads that are often damaged. The car park, run by the village, is at the end of the road, near the viewpoint.

  1. From your arrival harbour in the north of the island, take the inland road south-west.
  2. Follow the signs for Kelingking; the last kilometres are often congested.
  3. Park at the village car park and pay the entrance.
  4. Walk to the viewpoint, a few minutes on foot.

When to go

Early morning is the only quiet time: an empty viewpoint, soft light and bearable heat for the descent. From 10 am to 3 pm, day trips from Bali arrive in force. In late afternoon the crowd thins and the light turns the cliff golden.

What to pair it with

Kelingking opens the west-coast day: then Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, then a swim and the sunset at Crystal Bay. The east of the island, with Atuh and Diamond Beach, is a long drive away and needs another full day of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go down to Kelingking beach?

It depends on the period: the descent is sometimes closed or limited to visitors with a local guide. Ask at the entrance. It is steep and dangerous in any case.

Can you swim at Kelingking?

It is not advisable: the beach is exposed to the ocean swell, the currents are strong and there is no rescue.

Is Kelingking worth it without going down?

Yes: the view from the top is what people come for. Arrive before 10 am to see it without the crowd.
