Honeymoon in Bali: where to stay, which month, villa or resort

A honeymoon in Bali is not about the number of sights visited, but about the quality of a few moments: a sunrise facing Agung, an evening on the edge of a cliff, a day without an alarm. The choice of bases and room counts more than the program.

Key points

  • Two or three bases are enough: the rice fields or the valley, then the sea.
  • Combinations that work: Ubud and Uluwatu for a first trip, Sidemen and Amed for peace and quiet.
  • Observed range for a high-end room in Uluwatu: IDR 3,000,000 to 10,000,000 (≈ €150 to €500) a night, outside peaks.
  • May, June and September: dry weather, fewer crowds than in July and August.

This guide is for couples traveling for a special occasion. It names no hotel and attributes no price to any property: the amounts are observed ranges per night for a double room, taken from the where to stay pages, at €1 ≈ IDR 20,000.

Hesitating between Bali and another Southeast Asian destination for this trip? The comparison Bali or Thailand gives a verdict for couples. If it is decided, here is how to build the stay.

Where to go in Bali on honeymoon: four combinations

Four combinations work. Ubud then Uluwatu, the most classic: rice fields and culture, then cliffs and sunsets. Sidemen then Amed, for calm and an uncrowded sea. Ubud, Nusa Penida and Uluwatu, for the landscapes. Munduk and Amed, for cool air and the end of the road.

Combinations of bases for a honeymoon in Bali: for whom, atmosphere, constraint

Munduk, then AmedSecond trip, slow travelersForest and lakes, then seaMountain roads, cool air
Allow three to four nights per base. In ten days, two bases are enough; beyond two weeks, add a third.

Sidemen is the region few couples consider and many prefer: hillside lodges facing Agung, silent evenings, walks in the rice fields. Uluwatu offers the other face, that of cliffs and coves, about 45 to 60 min from the airport, which makes it a good last base.

What budget for a honeymoon in Bali

Accommodation makes most of the difference: a high-end room costs much less in the east than on the Bukit. Add the official fees per person, the driver and meals.

A comfortable rather than luxurious stay remains very pleasant in Bali: in Sidemen, the view over the valley is often the same. For the rest of the budget, driver, meals, activities, the budget guide details each item.

Which month for a honeymoon in Bali

May, June and September combine the dry weather of the dry season and fewer crowds than in July and August. April keeps green rice fields. The rainy season, from November to March, brings prices down, with showers often late in the day. Avoid having your arrival coincide with Nyepi.

The periods of the year for a honeymoon in Bali: advantages and limits
PeriodForAgainst
AprilRice fields still green, end of the rainsA few days of rough sea
May, June, SeptemberDry weather, generally calm seaBook the best rooms in advance
July, AugustDriest weatherHighest crowds and prices
OctoberEnd of the dry season, prices droppingFirst showers at the end of the month
November to MarchLower prices, very green islandRain, rough sea in the west, volcanoes in the clouds
The month-by-month details, with the climate normals of the airport weather station, are in the guide when to go to Bali.

Nyepi, the day of silence, falls in early March 2027, official date to be confirmed: for 24 h, the airport is suspended and you do not leave your accommodation. Experienced on the island in a pleasant place, it is a rare moment; falling on a flight day, it is a headache. The page Bali in September details one of the best months for a couple.

Villa or resort: what to choose on honeymoon

A villa offers privacy, a private pool and calm, but requires a driver for every outing and sometimes a deposit. A resort provides a restaurant, spa, transfers and day-to-day help, at the cost of a more standardized atmosphere. Many couples combine them: resort on arrival, villa for the last base.

Who it suits

  • Villa: complete privacy, private pool, breakfast served on site.
  • Villa: ideal for a base of three or four nights where you hardly move.
  • Resort: restaurant, spa and reception to arrange drivers and excursions.
  • Resort: fewer surprises with hot water, electricity and cleanliness.

Who it does not suit

  • Villa: isolation, dinners to organize, a deposit sometimes requested in cash.
  • Villa: undeclared listings, with no recourse in case of dispute.
  • Resort: standardized atmosphere, often far from the villages.
  • Resort: extra charges for the view, service and taxes.

For a villa, prefer a listing that shows an identifiable property, with a precise address and long-standing reviews, and pay through the platform. The pitfalls of listings, deposits and construction noise are detailed on where to stay in Bali.

What changes from a classic trip

On honeymoon, you keep fewer bases, choose the room for the view, book a driver rather than drive, get up early for one or two memorable moments and leave days empty. The money goes to a few nights and a few experiences, not to piling up excursions.

  1. Fewer bases: three or four nights in the same place, so as not to pack and unpack.
  2. The view before the size: a valley, rice field or ocean does more for the stay than a bigger room.
  3. A driver rather than a scooter: the international permit is required, and a fall ruins a trip.
  4. One or two chosen sunrises: over Agung from Sidemen or Amed, over the sea from Sanur.
  5. A ceremony, not a show: ask your accommodation whether a village temple is celebrating its odalan, and go in a sarong.
  6. Days with nothing planned: the pool and a massage are an activity in their own right.

A typical ten-day program as a couple

Over ten days, three nights in Ubud for the rice fields, dances and a water temple, two in Sidemen for the valley facing Agung, then three to four on the Bukit for the ocean and sunsets. It is the route of the site’s ten-day itinerary, to be slowed down even more.

Indicative ten-day honeymoon program in Bali, base by base
BaseNightsThe moments to keep
Ubud3Walk in the rice fields at dawn, dance in the evening, Tirta Empul
Sidemen2Sunrise over Agung, walk in the valley, dinner at the lodge
Uluwatu3 to 4A cove in the morning, sunset on the cliff, an empty day
Route taken from the 10-day itinerary. From Uluwatu, allow about 45 to 60 min to the airport.

The day-by-day details are on the 10-day itinerary, and the last transfer on airport → Uluwatu. For one more island, Nusa Penida requires a night there: as a return trip, the day goes by on a boat and in a car.

May, June and September, for the dry weather and fewer crowds than in July and August. April if you want rice fields that are still green.
