Bali or Thailand: which to choose, criterion by criterion
The two destinations compete for first trips to Southeast Asia. Yet they do not offer the same trip: Bali is an island, compact and slow, shaped by a unique Hindu culture; Thailand is a whole country, with a capital, mountains, two coastlines and a real transport network.

In short
- Bali: a compact island, an omnipresent Hindu culture, slow journeys for lack of public transport.
- Thailand: a country to travel through, Bangkok, the north, two coastlines with offset seasons, buses, trains and domestic flights.
- Bali for living culture, surfing and rice fields; Thailand for white sand islands and traveling on the move.
- In both, the real risks are the road and the sea, more than crime.
Choose Bali for a compact stay of one to three weeks, centered on Balinese culture, rice fields, diving and surfing. Choose Thailand for a trip on the move, a big city, white sand islands and simple public transport. With a family, both work; on a small budget, Thailand is easier to get around.
This comparison gives no scores out of 10: each criterion gets one word, and a verdict by profile concludes the page. The figures cited for Bali come from the site’s pages; for Thailand, we publish no price or duration that we have not recorded, and refer to the official sources.

Planning Bali on this site
Bali and Thailand, criterion by criterion
Bali wins on living culture, rice fields and surfing. Thailand wins on transport, variety of landscapes and the white sand beaches of its islands. Budget, food and safety are on a par, with nuances. Crowds depend mainly on the place and the season.
| Criterion | Bali | Thailand | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Variable | Flexible | Tie, Thailand simpler on a small budget |
| Beaches | Contrasting | Abundant | Thailand for white sand |
| Culture | Omnipresent | Varied | Bali for culture lived day to day |
| Food | Simple | Renowned | Thailand, narrowly |
| Transport | Slow | Developed | Thailand |
| Crowds | Concentrated | Concentrated | Tie: it all depends on the place |
| Safety | Reasonable | Reasonable | Tie: road and sea first |
| Seasonality | Simple | Offset | Thailand: always one coast in the dry |
| Surf | Renowned | Marginal | Bali |
| Diving | Varied | Varied | Tie |
Budget and transport: where the money and the time go
Both destinations can be done on little or a lot. In Bali, private transport weighs heavily, for lack of a public network: driver, ride-hailing or scooter. In Thailand, buses, trains and domestic flights make long journeys simpler and cheaper. For a trip on the move on a small budget, Thailand has the edge.
In Bali, two fixed costs are added per person. The rest depends on accommodation and the number of days with a driver. The budget guide details each item.

For Thailand, French tourists have been exempt from a visa for a 30-day stay since 15 September 2026, compared with 60 days before, according to France Diplomatie’s Thailand page: check the rules for your nationality before booking, as they have changed several times. We do not publish a price range for Thailand, for lack of a verified record.
Beaches and sea: white sand or waves
The Thai islands offer more white sand beaches and calm sea in season. Bali has contrasting beaches: dark sand and waves on the west coast, pale coves at the foot of the Bukit cliffs, a sheltered sea in Sanur, black pebbles in Amed. For pure lazing, Thailand; for surfing, Bali.
Bali is not an island of white sand postcards everywhere. The most beautiful pale coves are on the Bukit, often at the end of steep stairs, and the calmest sea is in Sanur, at high tide. In return, the island has one of the best surf reputations in Asia.
In Thailand, the islands are spread over two seas: the Andaman Sea to the west, with Phuket and Krabi, and the Gulf of Thailand to the east, with Koh Samui. For a detailed comparison with the best-known island on the west coast, see Bali or Phuket.
Culture and food: two religious worlds
Bali is the only Hindu-majority province in Indonesia: daily offerings, village ceremonies, active temples and subak rice fields are part of the trip, even without looking for them. Buddhist Thailand offers temples, ancient cities and a capital. Thai food is more renowned; Balinese food, simpler, is discovered at the warung.
What sets Bali apart is the density of culture in ordinary life: a canang sari on every doorstep, a procession blocking a road, a village temple celebrating its odalan. The Balinese temples and culture guide explains how to behave.
Thailand offers a diversity that Bali does not have: a very large city, historic sites, mountains in the north, night markets all over the country. On the food side, the choice is wider; in Bali, you eat well and simply at the warung, with a few dishes to try, such as nasi campur.
Seasons: one island, or two offset coasts
Bali has two simple seasons: dry from about April to October, wet from November to March, with rain often at the end of the day. Thailand has seasons that vary by region and coast, which often makes it possible to find a dry area. For a trip in July and August, Bali is in the heart of the dry season.
| Bali | Thailand | |
|---|---|---|
| Dry season | About April to October | Variable by region and coast |
| Rainy season | About November to March | Monsoon in summer on the Andaman coast; different calendar in the Gulf |
| July and August | The driest, the busiest | Rainy on the Andaman coast |
| Festivals that change the trip | Nyepi: 24 h with no airport and no going out | Depending on the region |
For a summer departure, Bali is a safe choice weather-wise: see Bali in July and Bali in August. In the rainy season, the island remains visitable, but the sea deteriorates in the west and the volcanoes cloud over.
Crowds and safety: the same rules
Both destinations concentrate crowds in a few places: in Bali, the south and Ubud in July and August; in Thailand, the best-known islands and neighborhoods. On safety, the real risks are the road, especially by scooter, the sea, the heat and health. Check official travel advice for both countries.
In Bali, you escape the crowds by changing region: Sidemen, Amed or Munduk stay calm in high season. In Thailand, the provinces of the far south, bordering Malaysia, are the subject of specific recommendations from France Diplomatie: check the map before building an itinerary.
Health precautions are similar: bottled water, protection against mosquitoes, caution with animals. For Bali, the details are in health and safety in Bali.
