Bali or Phuket: which island for the sea, partying or family

Phuket and Bali are two large beach islands in Southeast Asia, often weighed against each other for a holiday in the sun. Phuket is an island of beaches and resorts, facing the Andaman Sea and its boat excursions. Bali is an island of culture and landscapes, where the beach is only part of the trip.

In short

  • Phuket: an island of beaches and resorts, boat excursions, nightlife concentrated in Patong.
  • Bali: the sea plus culture, rice fields, volcanoes and surfing, on an island that is slower to get around.
  • Reversed seasons in summer: dry season in Bali, monsoon on the Andaman coast, with swell and red flags.
  • With a family, Sanur in Bali and the sheltered beaches of Phuket in the right season are on a par.

Choose Phuket for a simple beach holiday: sandy beaches, resorts, boat excursions to the neighboring islands and nightlife concentrated in Patong. Choose Bali to combine sea, rice fields, temples and surfing. In July and August, Bali is in the dry season while the Phuket coast is in the monsoon period.

This comparison is for those who are looking for the sea first. Each criterion gets one word, with no numerical score, then a verdict by profile concludes. We publish no prices for Phuket, for lack of a verified record; the figures for Bali come from the site’s pages.

For a broader comparison with the whole country, see Bali or Thailand. For a family stay in Bali, Bali with kids details regions, sea and journeys.

Bali and Phuket, criterion by criterion

Phuket wins on pure beach, the simplicity of resort holidays and concentrated nightlife. Bali wins on culture, inland landscapes and surfing. With a family, it is a tie. Prices cannot be compared without a reliable record. The season alone can decide, especially in summer.

Sea and beaches: the beach first, or the sea among other things

Phuket is built around its sandy beaches, on the west coast, and boat excursions to the neighboring islands. Bali has more contrasting beaches: dark sand and waves in Canggu, pale coves at the foot of the Bukit cliffs, a sheltered sea in Sanur, the Amed reef. For pure beach, Phuket; for variety, Bali.

The downside of Phuket is the monsoon: on the Andaman coast, the rainy season brings strong swell and dangerous currents in summer, and red flags multiply. In Bali, July and August are on the contrary the driest months, with strong currents on the surf beaches but a calm sea in Sanur.

In Bali, part of the sea is experienced underwater: snorkeling from the beach in Amed, diving on the Tulamben wreck, manta rays around Nusa Penida. In Phuket, most sea outings are by boat, to the surrounding islands and bays.

Nightlife: Patong, or the beach clubs of southern Bali

In Phuket, nightlife is concentrated in Patong: bars, clubs and pedestrian streets lively until late. In Bali, it is more scattered: beach clubs in Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu at sunset, bars in Kuta. For dense partying on foot, Phuket; for evenings by the ocean, Bali.

Southern Bali goes out a lot, but rarely on foot: every evening requires a ride-hailing car or a scooter, on congested roads. Beach clubs there have entry fees or a minimum spend and cocktails at European prices, which the budget guide lists among the items that blow up the bill.

For those not looking to party, the opposite matters: in Phuket, move away from Patong; in Bali, sleep in Ubud, Sanur, Sidemen or Amed, where evenings are quiet. The noisy and quiet neighborhoods of the south are compared on where to stay in Canggu.

With a family: Phuket resorts or a calm base in Sanur

Both islands suit families. Phuket offers many resorts on sandy beaches, in the right season. Bali offers Sanur, its sea sheltered at high tide, its promenade and about 30 to 40 min from the airport, then the rice fields of Ubud. The choice depends mainly on the season and on the appetite for culture.

Who it suits

  • Bali: Sanur for the calm sea, Ubud for the rice fields and the dances.
  • Bali: a dry season that coincides with the summer holidays.
  • Phuket: the simplicity of a resort on a sandy beach.
  • Phuket: boat excursions that children enjoy, on a calm sea.

Who it does not suit

  • Bali: the stairs down to the Bukit beaches with a stroller, and the long journeys.
  • Bali: the temple monkeys, as rabies is present.
  • Phuket: the swell and red flags in the monsoon period.
  • Phuket: Patong, if you want calm in the evening.

In Bali, two bases are enough with a family, and both the first and the last night fit well in Sanur: see airport → Sanur. The rest is in Bali with kids.

Prices: what makes up the bill, from one island to the other

On both islands, accommodation and transport make up most of the budget. In Bali, the price of a room depends on the region and the driver weighs heavily. For Phuket, we do not publish a range, for lack of a verified record.

  • Bali, comfortable double room

    ≈ €30 to €125

    IDR 600,000 to 2,500,000

Per night, depending on the region, outside peaks

In Bali, the first way to save is to reduce the number of bases: fewer days with a driver. The second is to travel outside July and August and the holidays. The ranges by neighborhood are on where to stay in Bali.

Seasons: the reversed summer

This is the criterion that often decides. Bali is in the dry season from about April to October, with a peak from July to August. The Andaman coast, where Phuket lies, has its monsoon in summer and its best season in winter. In summer, Bali; in winter, Phuket has the advantage of a calm sea.
