Bali with children: where to go, what to do, what tires them out

Bali lends itself well to a family trip, as long as you choose the right bases and cut down on driving. The sea is not calm everywhere, the stairs down to the Bukit beaches are no place for a pushchair, and the heat weighs more on a child than on an adult.

Key points

  • Sanur is the simplest family base: a sea sheltered by the reef, a promenade, about 30 to 40 min from the airport.
  • Two or three bases at most: each change of hotel is half a day lost for a child.
  • Bottled water, repellent during the day against dengue, and no contact with dogs or monkeys: rabies is present.
  • With young children, avoid the night climb of Batur, the Bukit beaches reached by stairs and slippery waterfalls.

The families who come back from Bali delighted have often done little: one base by a calm sea, another in the rice fields, active mornings and afternoons by the pool. Those who come back exhausted crossed the island every two days. This guide starts from that difference.

It complements health and safety in Bali for prevention, and where to stay in Sanur for choosing the neighborhood. If you are hesitating with seaside Thailand, the comparison Bali or Phuket has a chapter on families.

At what age to go to Bali with children

There is no minimum age, but each age changes the trip. With a baby, everything revolves around heat, sleep and short journeys. Young children enjoy the calm sea and the animals. Children who can swim open up snorkeling. Teenagers, surfing and hiking.

For vaccines and prevention suited to each child’s age, see a doctor 6 to 8 weeks before departure.

Families tied to school holidays often travel in July and August, the driest and busiest months. Book early, and read Bali in July to know what to expect in terms of crowds and prices.

The calmest regions of Bali for families

Sanur comes first: calm sea behind the reef, a long promenade, hotels with gardens and short journeys. Ubud completes it for the rice fields and culture, choosing accommodation away from the center. Jimbaran offers a gentler bay than the rest of the Bukit. Amed suits children who swim.

  • Sanur

The simplest base: sheltered sea, flat promenade for the pushchair, boat departures. About 30 to 40 min from the airport. See Sanur.

  • Ubud

Rice fields, evening dances, markets. Choose a room on the edge of the rice fields rather than in the heart of the center, which is noisy and has no pavements. See Ubud.

  • Jimbaran

North of the Bukit, a bay with soft sand and a calmer sea, close to the airport, but far from the surf spots.

  • Amed

For children at ease in the water: reef from the beach, Lipah cove. Black pebbles, no white sand, and a long drive.

Canggu attracts many families settled for several months, notably in Berawa, but the traffic and the waves of the west coast make it a less obvious choice for a first stay. Uluwatu is ill-suited to young children: almost all the beaches are reached by steep stairs.

Swimming with children: sheltered sea and flags

The Indian Ocean is powerful, and rip currents are the main danger on the west coast and the Bukit. With children, choose a sea sheltered by a reef, as in Sanur, respect the flags, stay in the supervised areas and keep children within arm’s reach, even in shallow water.

  • Red and yellow flags: supervised area, where swimming is advised.
  • Red flag: swimming forbidden or not advised.
  • Low tide: in Sanur, the sea withdraws far behind the reef and swimming becomes impossible; come at high tide.
  • Beach shoes: useful on the pebbles of Amed and on the reef, where cuts get infected quickly.
  • UV-protective T-shirt: the back of a snorkeling child stays exposed for a long time.

Children’s health in Bali: water, mosquitoes, animals, heat

Four precautions cover the essentials. Bottled water, including for teeth. Repellent suited to the child’s age and covering clothes, since dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes that bite during the day. No contact with dogs or monkeys. And plenty of water, shade and sunscreen.

  • Water: sealed bottles or dispensers in the accommodation, for drinking and for teeth.
  • Meals: hot dishes cooked to order, fruit peeled in front of you.
  • Mosquitoes: repellent suited to the child’s age, asked of the doctor or pharmacist, and a mosquito net at night.
  • Animals: rabies is present in dogs and macaques. No stroking, no feeding; in case of a bite or scratch, wash with soap and water, then see a doctor immediately.
  • Heat: children are among the most exposed. Unusual tiredness, headaches, nausea: shade, water, rest.

International clinics are mostly in the south and in Denpasar. Insurance covering medical costs and repatriation for each family member is essential; the details are in the guide health and safety.

Transfers with children: driver, times, car seats

As a family, a driver by the day remains the simplest option: air-conditioned car, stops on request, luggage in the boot. Limit the stages to two or three hours of driving, leave in the morning, and ask in advance for a child seat: it is far from provided everywhere.

Driving times from Bali airport to family bases
DestinationFrom the airportWith children
SanurAbout 30 to 40 minIdeal for the first and last night
Uluwatu and JimbaranAbout 45 to 60 minJimbaran rather than the cliffs
CangguAbout 45 to 75 minDepending on traffic, often heavy
UbudAbout 1 h 15 to 1 h 45A stage in its own right
AmedAbout 2 h 30 to 3 hOnly for children who cope with the road
Orders of magnitude, taken from the site’s transfer pages. At rush hour, allow more in the south.

Several people on a scooter, with a child between two adults, can be seen everywhere in Bali: that is no reason to copy it. The options from the airport are detailed on airport → Sanur, and the logic of a stay with two bases on the 7-day itinerary, whose family variant replaces Uluwatu with Sanur.

Activities children enjoy, and what tires them

Children like rice fields on foot, evening dances when they stay short, snorkeling from the beach, beginner surf lessons and the fishing boats of Sanur. What wears them out: long drives, waking up at night, beach stairs, slippery waterfalls and crowded sites.

Who it suits

  • Walking on the rice field dykes, early in the morning.
  • A Balinese dance in Ubud, leaving at the interval if needed.
  • Snorkeling at Jemeluk or Lipah, in Amed, for children who swim.
  • A beginner surf lesson on a sandy beach, in Kuta or Canggu.
  • The markets and craft workshops around Ubud.

Who it does not suit

  • Climbing Batur, departure around 3 am and about 2 h of climbing.
  • The Bukit beaches at the bottom of long stairs, with a pushchair.
  • Waterfalls with steep and slippery steps, especially after rain.
  • Nusa Penida as a day trip: boat, difficult roads, late return.
  • Temples where macaques snatch glasses and objects.

An afternoon by the pool is not time wasted: it is what lets you set off early the next day. To estimate the cost of a family stay, higher per day than for a couple, see the budget guide: the villa and the driver weigh more there than meals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best region of Bali with children?

Sanur, for its sea sheltered by the reef, its promenade and its proximity to the airport. Ubud completes it for the rice fields, with accommodation away from the center.

Is Bali dangerous for children?

The real risks are the sea, the heat, mosquitoes, animals and the road. They can be prevented: calm sea and flags, bottled water, repellent, distance from dogs and monkeys, a driver rather than a scooter.

Can you do Batur with children?

With teenagers who are good walkers, yes. With young children, it is not advisable: departure around 3 am, about 2 h of climbing and dense crowds in high season.

How many bases for a family trip to Bali?

Two, three at most. One base by the sea and one in the rice fields are enough for one to two weeks, with short trips around them.

Does a child need specific vaccines for Bali?

Routine vaccines up to date, plus those recommended for Indonesia. See a doctor 6 to 8 weeks before departure, notably for rabies and Japanese encephalitis.
