From the airport to Sidemen, into the eastern valley

Sidemen is a valley of terraced rice fields in east Bali, at the foot of Mount Agung and well off the main roads. We have not timed the direct ride: the range of roughly 1 h 30 to 2 h is an estimate, built from the published airport → Ubud and Ubud → Sidemen segments, the direct road skipping the detour via Ubud.

From Denpasar airport to Sidemen, allow roughly 1 h 30 to 2 h. That is not a timed figure: we start from airport → Ubud (1 h 15 to 1 h 45) and Ubud → Sidemen (1 h to 1 h 15), the direct road being shorter. Book a driver; no fare is official.

In brief

  • Time: roughly 1 h 30 to 2 h, an estimate from adding published segments, not a timed trip.
  • Price: no official fare. Book a driver at a price agreed in advance, stops included.
  • Best time: a daytime departure, so you reach the valley before dark.
  • Good to know: ride-hailing is scarce in Sidemen; plan your next ride as soon as you arrive.

Sidemen is not a town but a valley, with villages strung along a narrow road. From the airport you follow the expressway east, then climb into the valley on country roads. The region page is Sidemen.

In the 10-day itinerary, you reach Sidemen from Ubud, via Ubud → Sidemen. Going straight from the airport makes sense if you want to start your stay in the quiet of the east.

Ways to get from the airport to Sidemen

The comfortable option is a booked driver, often arranged by your accommodation. Ride-hailing may accept the ride from the airport, but the driver returns empty and the last road is narrow. The airport taxi works without a booking. A scooter is a bad idea straight off a flight.

Ask your accommodation in Sidemen: many work with a driver who knows the valley and the exact spot of each villa, sometimes at the end of a track. General rules are in getting around Bali.

The route, step by step

The first part follows the expressway east and usually flows well. You then leave the main roads to climb into the valley on a narrow road between rice fields and villages. The very end, to your accommodation, may be on a track that is barely drivable.

Pitfalls on the airport–Sidemen route

The pitfalls: landing in the evening and driving up into the valley in the dark anyway; leaving with ride-hailing and no plan for what comes next; giving just “Sidemen” as the address; and agreeing a price without spelling out any stops on the way.

  1. Driving up at night: the valley road is unlit. Sleep in Sanur if your flight lands late.
  2. Leaving with no onward plan: ride-hailing is scarce in Sidemen, so book your next ride on arrival.
  3. Giving just the valley name: share the exact location of your accommodation.
  4. Agreeing a price without the stops: they add waiting time, which should be included.

What next: Sidemen, then Amed

In Sidemen, read the region page and the where-to-stay page. The natural next stop is Amed, on the east coast, along a valley road. Let us be honest: the valley is peaceful because it is out of the way, and every departure needs a driver booked ahead.

Read next: the Sidemen page, where to stay in Sidemen, then Sidemen → Amed for the coast. If you are heading back to the hills instead, see Ubud → Sidemen the other way round.
