From Sidemen to Amed, from the valley to the east coast

Sidemen and Amed are two eastern bases, one in a valley of rice fields, the other on a coast of fishing villages. We have not timed this drive: the range of roughly 1 h 30 to 2 h is an estimate. Both are about 2 h 30 from the airport, by different valleys; the link between them is much shorter.

This is the sequence of the 2-week itinerary: Ubud, then Sidemen, then Amed. The first leg is on Ubud → Sidemen.

Pitfalls on the Sidemen–Amed route

The pitfalls: leaving in the late afternoon and finishing on the coast road in the dark; counting on ride-hailing in Sidemen; agreeing a price without mentioning the Tirta Gangga stop; and giving just “Amed” as the address when the coast spans several villages.

  1. Leaving late: the Amed coast road is for daylight.
  2. Counting on ride-hailing: book a driver the day before through your accommodation.
  3. Agreeing a price without the stops: Tirta Gangga adds waiting time, which should be included.
  4. Giving just “Amed”: name the village, from Jemeluk to Aas.

What next: Amed, and beyond

In Amed, read the region page and the where-to-stay page to pick a village. After that, two options: the Gilis by boat, or Munduk via the north. Let us be honest: the road to Munduk is long, and heading back south costs half a day.

Read next: the Amed page, where to stay in Amed, then Amed → Gili or Amed → Munduk.
