From Amed to Munduk, the long way round the north

From Amed to Munduk, you do not head back south: you follow the north coast, then climb to the lakes. It is the most direct way, but also one of the longest drives between two bases. We have not timed it: the range of roughly 2 h 30 to 3 h 30 is an estimate, not a measured time.

In brief

  • Time: roughly 2 h 30 to 3 h 30 via the north, an estimate based on published segments, not a timed trip.
  • Price: no official fare. Book a driver at a price agreed in advance, stops included.
  • Best time: leave in the morning to cross the pass before the late-day mist.
  • Good to know: ride-hailing is scarce at both ends; only a booked driver makes this drive simple.

Amed is at the eastern tip, Munduk high in north-central Bali. Between them, the road follows the north coast, calmer than the south, then leaves the sea to climb to the lakes. The region pages: Amed and Munduk.

The 3-week itinerary splits this drive in two, with a night in Lovina on the north coast. That is the most restful way to do it. From the south, Munduk is better reached via Ubud → Munduk.

Ways to get from Amed to Munduk

A booked driver is the only comfortable option: ride-hailing is scarce in Amed and Munduk, and the drive is long. Two ways to do it: in one go, leaving early, or in two legs with a night on the north coast. A scooter is not sensible with luggage.

The route, step by step

The drive leaves Amed on the coast road, then follows the north coast, flatter and quieter. After the coast, the road climbs to the lakes in hairpins: that is the slow part, and where mist often settles in the afternoon. The end drops down to Munduk.

Pitfalls on the Amed–Munduk route

The pitfalls: leaving after lunch and climbing the pass in mist and darkness; going back via the south and Ubud, which adds a lot; counting on ride-hailing; and underestimating how tiring such a long drive is after several days at the beach.

  1. Leaving late: the pass above the lakes is often misty late in the day.
  2. Going back south: the northern route is more direct than the detour via Ubud.
  3. Counting on ride-hailing: book a driver the day before.
  4. Doing it in one go with children: a night on the north coast breaks it up.

What next: Munduk, then back down

In Munduk, read the region page for hikes, lakes and waterfalls. Afterwards, the way back south goes via Ubud or straight to the coast. Plan several nights in Munduk: after a drive like this, a single night is not worth it.

Read next: the Munduk page, then Ubud → Munduk to head back down to the hills, or Canggu → Munduk for the west coast the other way round.
