From the airport to Munduk, up to the northern lakes

Munduk is a mountain village above the lakes of north-central Bali, surrounded by plantations and waterfalls. It is one of the bases furthest from the airport. In brief

  • Time: roughly 2 h 30 to 3 h, an estimate from adding published segments, not a timed trip.
  • Price: no official fare. Book a driver at a price agreed in advance, stops included.
  • Best time: leave in the morning to cross the passes before the late-day mist.
  • Good to know: ride-hailing is scarce in Munduk; plan your next ride before you go up.

Munduk sits high in north-central Bali, above Lakes Tamblingan and Buyan. The road leaves the south, climbs to the lakes on winding mountain roads, then drops slightly to the village. The region page is Munduk.

The 3-week itinerary reaches Munduk from the north, after Amed. From Ubud, the drive is covered on Ubud → Munduk; going straight from the airport makes sense for a hiking-focused stay.

Ways to get from the airport to Munduk

Only one truly comfortable option: a booked driver, by the trip or by the day, who can stop on the way. Ride-hailing may accept the ride, but finding a car to leave Munduk is hard. A scooter is a bad idea over such a distance in the mountains, especially after a flight.

Places to stay in Munduk often know a driver used to the mountain roads. Ask whether stops, fuel and parking are included. General rules are in getting around Bali.

The route, step by step

The first part crosses the south and its heavy traffic. You then climb toward the lakes on winding mountain roads, cooler and often in the clouds by afternoon. The end drops down to the village, where places to stay are spread across the hillside.

Pitfalls on the airport–Munduk route

The pitfalls: landing in the afternoon and going up anyway, arriving in mist and darkness; leaving with no plan for getting out again; forgetting it is cool at altitude; and trying to do Munduk as a day trip from the south.

  1. Going up late in the day: the passes are often misty and the road winds. Sleep in the south if you land late.
  2. Leaving with no onward plan: book the driver for your departure as soon as you arrive.
  3. Arriving dressed for the beach: bring a warm layer for the evening.
  4. Doing Munduk as a day trip: the road costs two half days, so sleep there.

What next: Munduk, and after

In Munduk, read the region page for hikes and waterfalls. Afterwards, Ubud is the easiest way back down. Let us be honest: Munduk is far from everything, and this drive only makes sense for several nights; for just one, stay in central Bali instead.

Read next: the Munduk page, then Ubud → Munduk for the drive the other way, or Amed → Munduk if you are linking up with the east via the north.
