None of our itineraries includes the Gilis: an extension fits best at the end of the 3-week itinerary. The choice between boat and plane for Lombok is explained on Bali → Lombok.

Pitfalls on the Bali–Gili trip
The pitfalls: returning to Bali on the day of an international flight; a ticket without the harbor transfer; landing on a different Gili than planned; touts at the harbor; and a heavy hard-shell suitcase, awkward when you land in the water.
- Returning on the day of your flight home: a delayed boat means a missed plane. Keep at least one night in Bali.
- Not checking what is included: hotel transfer, luggage, the right island.
- Following a tout at the harbor: stick with your operator.
- Bringing a heavy hard-shell suitcase: landing often means wading.
What next: the Gilis, then Lombok or Bali
From Gili Trawangan, Lombok is a short crossing away, and fast boats run back to Bali. Before you go, compare Bali and Lombok to decide whether the extension is worth it. Let us be honest: on a short trip, the Gilis cost a lot of travel for few days.
