From Uluwatu to Sanur, from the cliffs to the lagoon

Uluwatu and Sanur sit either side of the airport: one on the Bukit to the south, the other on the east coast. The drive between them is short by island standards. We have not timed it: the range of roughly 1 h to 1 h 30 is an estimate, made by adding our two published airport transfers, which form its two halves.

Pitfalls on the Uluwatu–Sanur route

The pitfalls: leaving in the late afternoon and meeting the evening peak near the airport; doing this drive on the very morning of a boat to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan; and taking the first price without comparing apps or a metered taxi.

  1. Leaving in the late afternoon: the airport area clogs up.
  2. Chaining this drive with a morning boat: sleep in Sanur the night before the crossing.
  3. Taking the first price: compare Grab, Gojek and a metered taxi.
  4. Forgetting a margin before a flight: from Sanur the airport is 30 to 40 min away, but traffic varies.

What next: Sanur, before the islands or the flight

In Sanur, read the region page and the where-to-stay page. Boats to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida leave from here, and the airport is close for an early flight. This drive is easy; it is mainly a transition, to do just once.

Read next: the Sanur page, where to stay in Sanur, then Sanur → Nusa Lembongan. If you are heading up to the hills instead, see Sanur → Ubud.
