In brief

  • Time: roughly 1 h 45 to 2 h 30, an estimate from adding published segments, not a timed trip.
  • Price: no official fare. Ride-hailing at the price shown in the app, driver at a price agreed in advance.
  • Best time: late morning, after check-out, to stay clear of the evening peak around the airport.
  • Good to know: the road passes close to the airport, the busiest point of the whole trip.

The Bukit is a peninsula south of the airport; Ubud sits in the hills north of Denpasar. Between them, the road climbs off the Bukit, runs past the airport, crosses the outskirts of Denpasar and then heads up into the island’s center. The region pages: Uluwatu and Ubud.

The 7-day itinerary covers this route the other way round, from Ubud down to the Bukit. Both halves of the road have their own pages: airport → Uluwatu and airport → Ubud.

Ways to get from Uluwatu to Ubud

Ride-hailing works well from the Bukit, where there are plenty of cars, and drops you in Ubud without trouble if your accommodation is reachable by car. A booked driver is more comfortable with luggage or children and lets you stop on the way. A scooter is a poor idea for such a long run across the south.

The route, step by step

The trip starts with the climb off the Bukit, usually smooth in the late morning, then passes level with the airport, where most of the variation happens. Next come the outskirts of Denpasar, slow at rush hour, before the climb to Ubud along village roads.

StepWhat happens
Off the BukitClifftop roads, usually clear outside the evening
Around the airportThe stretch shared with both published transfers, and the busiest
Outskirts of DenpasarThe part that makes the time swing
Up to UbudCraft villages, then Ubud’s main street, often slow
Orders of magnitude, not measured: the total depends mostly on when you pass the airport and Denpasar.

Pitfalls on the Uluwatu–Ubud route

The pitfalls: leaving in the late afternoon and hitting the evening peak near the airport, taking a ride-hailing price without comparing, giving just “Ubud” as the address, and trying to do Ubud as a day trip, which leaves very little time once you arrive.

  1. Leaving in the late afternoon: the airport area and Denpasar clog up, and the top of the range becomes the norm.
  2. Taking the first price: compare Grab and Gojek, or ask your accommodation for a fixed price.
  3. Giving just the town name: Ubud spreads over several villages, so share the exact location.
  4. Doing Ubud as a day trip from the Bukit: the road eats most of the day, so sleep there instead.

What next: settling into Ubud

Once in Ubud, read the region page to plan your days and the where-to-stay page to pick a neighborhood. If you head east afterwards, Sidemen is the natural next step. To be honest, this is a long drive for one island: group your nights so you only do it once.

Read next: the Ubud page, where to stay in Ubud, then the onward trip east on Ubud → Sidemen. Still torn between Uluwatu and Sanur as a beach base? Compare with Uluwatu → Sanur.
