Comparison

The islands or the east coast: Nusa Penida and Lembongan, or Amed

Both promise the sea, far from the south. Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are reached by boat from Sanur; Amed, at the end of the eastern road, lines up fishing villages facing the reef. One is about cliffs and manta rays, the other about snorkeling straight off the beach.

Facts as of · sourced figures

Choose the islands, Nusa Penida or Lembongan, for spectacular cliffs and manta rays, if you accept damaged roads and crossings that depend on the sea. Choose Amed for snorkeling off the beach, quiet villages and diving all year round, at the cost of a long drive from the airport.

In short

  • Islands: fast boat from Sanur, a crossing of about 30 to 45 min, cliffs and mantas.
  • Amed: about 2 h 30 to 3 h by road, a reef right from the beach at Jemeluk.
  • On Nusa Penida, roads are damaged and steep: scooters are not for beginners.
  • In both cases, sleep there: a day trip is spent mostly on the road.

This comparison sets the islands of the strait, Nusa Penida and its neighbor Nusa Lembongan, against the coast of Amed, at Bali’s eastern tip. It quotes no prices or addresses: the areas to stay in are on where to stay on Nusa Penida and where to stay in Amed.

Verdict: who the islands suit, who the coast suits

The islands suit travelers who want cliff scenery and dives with manta rays, and who accept boat logistics. Amed suits families, beginners in snorkeling and diving, and those looking for silence. With two weeks, the two combine well.

The islands are the right choice for the Kelingking viewpoints, drift dives and manta rays, which are for experienced divers at the dive center’s discretion. Nusa Lembongan, smaller, is simpler to live on; Nusa Penida takes time, because every site lies at the end of a difficult road.

Amed is the right choice to put your head under water right from the beach, with a mask and snorkel, learn to dive in calm water and sleep in a fishing village. The choice of village changes the stay: Jemeluk for the reef on foot, Bunutan and Lipah for the view, Selang for silence.

Daily life: what you do there

On Nusa Penida, the day is spent by car with a driver, from one viewpoint to the next, or by boat to the dive sites. In Amed, it is spent in the water: snorkeling at sunrise, a nap, a shallow wreck, sunset at the Jemeluk viewpoint. You hardly drive at all.

Kelingking and Angel’s Billabong are dangerous: a steep descent at one, sudden waves at the other. In Amed, bring reef shoes for the pebbles. The sites on both sides are compared in diving and snorkeling in Bali.

Budget: what costs more, and why

On the islands, what weighs is the logistics: the round-trip crossing, then a driver for each day of sightseeing, since the roads rule out scooters for beginners. In Amed, it is the drive from the airport with a booked driver, then the dives. The observed ranges are on the “where to stay” pages.

  • Islands: boat, a driver for the day and dive trips to see the mantas.
  • Amed: a long car journey, but free snorkeling off the beach.
  • In Amed, arrive with cash: few ATMs, limited withdrawals.

Getting there from the airport

For Nusa Penida, allow 30 to 40 min by road to Sanur, then 30 to 45 min by boat, plus waiting; Nusa Lembongan takes 30 to 45 min by boat, plus check-in. Amed is about 2 h 30 to 3 h by road: a journey to make by day, never as a round trip.

The pitfalls we see travelers fall into

The most common pitfall is doing Nusa Penida as a day trip from the south: you spend the day on the road and at the harbor. For Amed, it is arriving at night on the coastal road after a long flight. Then come scooters on the island’s roads and a return boat the day before a flight.

  • Rushing Nusa Penida in a day: sleep there at least two nights.
  • Renting a scooter on Nusa Penida with no experience; see renting a scooter.
  • Planning the return boat on the same day as an international flight.
  • Arriving in Amed without cash, or swimming alone far from shore when the current picks up.
