Munduk or Sidemen: the northern highlands or the eastern valley

These are Bali’s two refuges for those worn out by the south. Munduk, in the northern highlands, lives among forest, plantations and lakes, in the cool and the mist. Sidemen, in an eastern valley, lives to the rhythm of rice fields and looms, facing Mount Agung.

Facts as of · sourced figures

Choose Munduk to walk through the forest to the waterfalls, sleep in the cool and tour the island via the north. Choose Sidemen for the rice fields, weaving and Mount Agung, closer to the airport and on the way to Amed. For ten days, Sidemen fits better; Munduk earns its place over three weeks.

In short

  • Munduk: mountains, waterfalls and lakes, cool nights, afternoon mist.
  • Sidemen: a farming valley, rice fields, songket weaving, views of Agung.
  • From the airport: about 1 h 45 to Sidemen, about 2 h 30 to Munduk.
  • Two to three nights are enough in either, and neither has any nightlife.

This comparison quotes no prices or addresses. The areas to stay in are on where to stay in Sidemen and in the where to stay part of the Munduk page; the sights, on the Munduk and Sidemen pages.

Verdict: who Munduk suits, who Sidemen suits

Munduk suits hikers, those escaping the heat and travelers touring the island via the north. Sidemen suits gentle walkers, photographers, couples and a first trip looking for calm after Ubud. Both will bore anyone who wants to go out at night.

Munduk is the right base to walk from the village to the waterfalls, see Lake Tamblingan at sunrise and sleep under a blanket. It disappoints sunbathers: mist often rises in the afternoon. The winding roads tire those prone to motion sickness.

Sidemen is the right base to walk through the rice fields with a village guide, see farming and weaving at work, and head out to Besakih, Tirta Gangga or Lempuyang with an early start. It also breaks up the road to Amed. You have to get back in the car to find the sea.

Daily life: what you do there

In Munduk, you walk early to the waterfalls, visit Ulun Danu Bratan at opening time and get back before the mist. In Sidemen, you walk the rice fields in the morning, visit the weavers, then drive to a temple in the east. In both, you eat where you sleep.

The trails of both regions are compared in hiking in Bali, Munduk’s falls in Bali waterfalls, and Sidemen’s songket in Bali crafts and markets.

Budget: what costs more, and why

Both are fairly gentle: guesthouses, lodges and a few boutique hotels, and you pay less in Sidemen than in Ubud. What weighs is getting around: a driver for outings in the east from Sidemen, and the long round trip to Munduk. Rooms with a view cost more than those in the village.

  • Munduk: the ridge above Tamblingan, with its view of the lakes, comes at the price of isolation.
  • Sidemen: hillside hotels offer Agung and a pool, at the price of steep roads.
  • Observed ranges for Sidemen are on where to stay in Sidemen.

Getting there from the airport

Sidemen is the closer: about 1 h 45 according to the region page, roughly 1 h 30 to 2 h according to the transfer page, on narrow valley roads. Munduk takes about 2 h 30, roughly 2 h 30 to 3 h according to the transfer page, on a mountain road to be driven by day.

The pitfalls we see travelers fall into

The most common pitfall is trying to do both in one week: that means two long drives in opposite directions. Then come arriving at night, on Munduk’s mountain road as on Sidemen’s steep lanes, and a two-night stay spent looking for something to do.

  • Doing Munduk and Sidemen in one week: pick one, according to your route.
  • Driving at night: winding roads in Munduk, steep and poorly lit ones in Sidemen.
  • Going up to Munduk without a warm layer or closed shoes.
  • Renting a scooter on Sidemen’s hillsides with no experience, especially in the rain.
