Batu Bolong: the Canggu beach where people learn to surf
Batu Bolong is Canggu’s central beach: grey volcanic sand, a soft wave over a sandy bottom, a row of surf schools and a small temple at the water’s edge. In the evening, the whole neighbourhood comes down for the sunset. The hard part is not the wave, it is the street that leads there.

In short
Facts as of · sourced figures
You take a surf lesson, rent a foam board, or sit at a warung and watch other people fall off. The wave breaks over sand, slow and fairly predictable, especially at mid tide. In the evening the beach becomes the neighbourhood’s sunset meeting point.

Key points
- Batu Bolong has the gentlest wave in Canggu: it is where first lessons happen.
- Board rental and lesson prices are posted on the beach and vary: compare on the spot.
- Sunset draws a crowd; the access street is jammed in late afternoon.
- Currents near the rocks: stay in the sandy zone the schools point out.
The name comes from the Batu Bolong temple, set on a rock at the end of the beach. Around it, surf schools, sunbed renters and warungs share the sand. The water is not turquoise: this is a volcanic west-coast beach, made for the wave more than for swimming.
To progress after your first lessons, see surfing in Bali; for the neighbourhood and where to stay, Canggu.

Getting there within Canggu

- Follow Jalan Batu Bolong down to the sea.
- Leave the scooter in an attended lot: the fee is posted or told on arrival.
- Arrive before 4 p.m. for sunset, or walk the final stretch.

When to go
Morning for surfing: calmer water, lighter wind and fewer people in the lineup. Late afternoon for sunset, if you accept the crowd. Conditions change with tide and swell from one day to the next: the schools on the sand know which slot suits beginners on the day.
| Slot | For | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Surfing, quiet beach | Light wind, fewer people in the water |
| Midday | Lessons | Strong sun: sunscreen and a rash vest |
| Late afternoon | Sunset | Crowds and a jammed street |
What to pair it with
Echo Beach is just to the north, with hollower waves and seafood restaurants: at low tide you can walk there along the sand. Keep Tanah Lot temple for a sunset, leaving early so you do not end up stuck in traffic.
- Echo Beach: to watch experienced surfers and eat grilled fish.
- Tanah Lot: the temple on its rock, to the north-west.
