Padang Padang: a cove below the road, and plenty of people
Padang Padang is a small white-sand cove tucked below the Bukit road. You reach it by a staircase that squeezes through a crack in the rock. The beach is pretty and narrow, so it fills up fast in the afternoon. Offshore breaks a wave strictly for experienced surfers.

In short
Facts as of · sourced figures
You walk down the stairs, lay out your towel and swim off the sand when the sea is calm. You watch the surfers on the reef, to the right. A few vendors sell drinks and snacks. There is not much more: it is a beach for a quiet half-day, not a whole day.

Key points
- Access is by a staircase cut through a rock crevice, from the road.
- The beach is small: come in the morning to get space.
- The reef wave is a competition spot, not a place to learn.
- The entrance fee is posted at the top of the stairs; allow 1.5 to 3 hours.
Padang Padang has stayed famous since a film put it on screen, and its wave hosts surf competitions in some years. In between, it is a beach of pale sand and clear water on calm days, wedged between two walls of cliff.
For other spots on the peninsula, see surfing in Bali; to stay nearby, Uluwatu.

What you do at Padang Padang
You walk down the stairs, lay out your towel and swim off the sand when the sea is calm. You watch the surfers on the reef, to the right. A few vendors sell drinks and snacks. There is not much more: it is a beach for a quiet half-day, not a whole day.
- The descent through the crevice, narrow: you sometimes wait for others to come up.
- Swimming in the middle of the cove, on calm days and away from the reef.
- Watching the surf from the beach: a hollow wave over a shallow reef.
- The monkeys at the top of the stairs, drawn by bags.
Getting there from Uluwatu
The entrance is on the main Bukit road, at a bridge, between Bingin and Uluwatu. You park in the roadside lot, pay at the top, then walk down the stairs. By scooter it is simplest; by taxi, ask to be dropped at the entrance.
- Park in the lot beside the main road.
- Pay the entrance at the desk, where the price is posted.
- Walk down in shoes with grip, bag closed because of the monkeys.
When to go
In the morning, for calm and room on the sand. In the afternoon the cove fills quickly and the shade disappears. The tide matters: at high tide the strip of sand shrinks. On big-swell days swimming becomes tricky, but the surf show is at its best.
| Moment | Crowd | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Light | The best slot for the beach |
| Afternoon | Heavy | Sand full, waiting on the stairs |
| Big swell | Variable | Tricky swimming, spectacular surf |
What to pair it with
Uluwatu Temple is a few minutes to the south-west: a morning at Padang Padang, then the temple and the kecak at sunset. Suluban, closer to the temple, offers another dramatic descent through the cliff, wilder and more focused on surfing than on swimming.
- Pura Luhur Uluwatu: the cliff temple and the kecak.
- Suluban: the beach in the crevice, below the warungs.
